I'm Cammie, mom to , 8rys. old, seizure free on the diet for 14 months now. I'm so happy to hear you are seeing success the first week--that's a great sign. Some teams do recommend that you fast your child for a few meals if ketones drop. Per our dietician, I would just omit the carb portion of 's meal(s) when her ketones dropped. That's less drastic than fasting. Check ketones again before the next meal to see if they are stronger. Hopefully, that will bump the ketones up for now -- do call your dietician on Monday for recommendations. Sometimes it just takes a while for the ketone level to " settle " . Other reasons for temporary low ketones are new foods, too much fluid intake, and fighting an illness (whether the child actually comes down with it or not). Also toothpaste, lotions, etc. can lower ketones if they contain hidden carbs. Hopefully, you received a list of things like this that are " o.k " for keto. Is on any meds? AEDs can negatively affect the diet, too-- some worse than others. Sounds like he's off to a good start, though -- WOOO HOOOO!!
