Guest guest
Does anyone know if I can replace MCT oil with flax seed oil? Kristan gets MCT oil in her bottles/meals, 7 grams per meal, but I was wondering after reading a recent post that flax seed can help with ketones if replacing the MCT oil with flax seed oil might help her get higher ketones. The MCT was to help get her into higher ketosis, but that never worked, now it's just used as part of her fat in her meals. Her dietitian in the past said that MCT oil is the best oil to use to up ketones. We are in the process of weaning, 3.5:1 ratio at the moment, but if the flax seed makes a difference, it's worth a shot. Kristan's seizures are way up again, up to 40 today, it's so frustrating, she is like this on the higher ratios too, we don't think the seizures have increased b/c of the wean, she has good and bad days no matter what ratio she is on. If this can be done, is there a specific kind of flax seed oil that should be used? Thanks. Guest guest
MCT Oil has 8.3 cals per gram. Most long chain fats (like flax seed oil) have higher calories/gram so the two would not be just interchangeable.
Guest guest
I am not totally sure about this. When I did talk to my dietician about changing Mike's oil - he gets MCT as well, she said the meals would need to be re-calculated because MCT " burns hotter " than other oils. Jenn Can you replace MCT oil with Flax Seed Oil? Does anyone know if I can replace MCT oil with flax seed oil?

Guest guest
Re: replacing MCT with flax oil Be really careful with the flax oil....I tried to replace the MCT Rebekah has been on for the past three years, just recently. I decided to keep her on the MCT until all of her meds were gone because as soon as I started to decrease it her ketones also dropped. I tried replacing part of it with MCT..only about 3 mls with flax oil and by the end of the day she had a MAJOR explosive runny BM....so just a warning to be cautious since flax tends to get things moving rather quickly....at least in her case it did!!!
