Guest guest
Jake is having an MRI and CT Scan on Monday under general anesthesia. The week after, he is having cochlear implant surgery. I assume he will get IV anesthesia, fluids, and maybe some IV pain meds after the surgery. Will any of this mess up the diet? I know to expect some problems with being off his formula and the stress of anesthesia/surgery/pain, etc., but am just wondering - is all IV stuff keto-friendly for the most part? Thanks! Guest guest
Depends on what they intend using Amy - no, all IV stuff is not keto friendly, a lot have 'mixes' added in for bio-availability, ease on veins etc. You basically have to ask about each one individually, so finding out beforehand is pretty important. Your dietician should be able to do this for you - ours did during 's hospital admissions, basically anything - IV, oral or skin applied was run by her first - of course there are always gonna be slip ups, and always gonna be Docs who think they 'know best', so triple check everything youself. For instance, when needed a hydrating IV fluid at one point, one Dr in PICU said that a diluted 25% dextrose solution would be fine - she was wrong...and we had to physically stand in front of and stop them administering it till they got hold of the dietician to confirm what we were saying - ie - that a saline drip was all he could have for hydration. That sort of thing.... ----- Original Message ----- From: Amy Jake is having an MRI and CT Scan on Monday under general anesthesia. The week after, he is having cochlear implant surgery. Guest guest
You need to tell the anesthesiologist he is on the keto diet and they will only give him the saline fluids. Stella had an MRI and they didn't need an IV for that and she had general anesthesia too. I know for her VNS though she'll have an IV and it will not have glucose. There are many pain meds too that are keto friendly, just have your dietician be a part of that process. -- -mom to Stella, 5years old, started keto diet May 10th 2004 still waiting to be seizure free. Also on Lamictal, epam and Diamox. Anisa is almost 10 and a happy healthy girl.
