Illness often has this effect on our little ones! The book says to keep

them hydrated and not worry too much about getting in all of the meals.

Ketosis will return (if it leaves) after the illness is gone and she

starts eating again.

When my 2.5 year old daughter loses her appetite, we just drop an NG

tube and pump her food down her.

Good Luck. She'll be ok.

Help! Urgent!

Dear All,

Alice, my 2.5 years old daughter, has been on the diet for 11 months

and everything is perfect shape. She has been seizure-free for two

months. However, her appetite suddenly dropped a lot & she is just

refusing drinking & eating from the day before yesterday for unknown

reasons. She ate very well before and usually finished one meal in 5

minutes. Her ketone level is 120-160 even higher all day long. She

has a tiny bit of fever because she played a lot with a kid with

running nose on Sunday. Now she just refuse to drink and eat. We are

worried very much.

Any suggestion?

Sounds like maybe a flu bug. Have you called your dr & dietician? Will she eat

sugar-free jello?

I would have her bicarb level checked. Sounds like acidosis to me.

It is treatable but can be dangerous so it is important to check.

You can give her 30cc's of apple juice right now and see if that makes a

difference in the way she feels. If so then you definitely know that her

ketones are too high right now. This would indicate that it is probably

time to lower her ratio. Her situation sounds a lot like 's daughter,

When did you introduce the carnitine ? This may be boosting her ketones

too high - it can also, (well we found this anyway) as a chain reaction

increase med strength from having those ketones going higher, so I'd be v

cautious about any dilantin increases you do. Blood levels don't always give a

true reflection as to how the med itself is affecting the child, so watch for

any seizure increases (toxicity induced) as the meds peak perhaps...

Carnitine deficiency could have been a problem diet wise for her, and

introducing it may see a good response ketone/seizure wise, but it can also on

the othr side of the coin, cause a parodoxical seizure increase, so another one

to keep an eye on...

With med increases, introducing carnitine, and a calorie increase, as well as

an infection, she has a lot going on right now, so you may have to sit tight and

see what happens in all depts. I know the 'one change at a time' thing is ideal

but like you, we have had to jump in with more than one change at a time in the

past, so I know how confusing and frustrating it can all get :(

Hope things are on the improve - those drop attacks are the WORST, hated them

with a passion, almost as much as I hated 's helmet - but needs must,

safety first :(

Alice is eating and drinking again. She still has

some temperature. She sweats a lot during her

sleep--there are sweat on her nose, her hair is wet,

and T-shirt is wet, which is unusual. She did a blood

test last Friday, her dr told us it was usual. Now I

am guessing maybe it is a bacteria infection... We

don't know if the fever changed her metabolic rate or

other, her Dilantin level dropped from 16 last month

to 7, which might be the reason why the seizures are

going on like crazy. We did increase her calorie by

25cal, and added Carnitine since her level was " very

low " .

Any thoughts?

Alice's mom,

Most likely she is getting an illness, as you suspect. You may get

seizures as a result. Ketones normally go down and glucose goes up with

an illness. Treat the illness first. Give her broth and other liquids as

tolerated. Gradually reintroduce meals. You may use the " keto eggnog " at

first as it is in ratio and she doesn't have to finish it all.

Not eating or drinking is like the original regime of fasting to control

seizures. Don't worry too much about it.

If the fever gets high you can use cool face clothes and/or diabetic

cold medicine.
