Guest guest
Hello! I need some insight on my daughter's problem. For some nights now she wakes and cries. I don't think it is a seizure... Since I lowered her ratio from 4:1 to 3.5:1 her ketones no longer are high all day and night, but build and get high by bedtime. She is feeling better. However, lately, at night the multistix I test her ketones with turns dark IMMEDIATELY indicating to me that the ketones are mighty high. The nights she settles and sleeps well either before or after crying are when I give a tablespoon of apple juice in some water to her. Is there such a thing as lowering the ratio at the last meal of the day, or should I be lowering it all day? I have just lowered her calories, because she had gained over four pounds in less than six weeks on the diet... obviously getting too many calories. She seems to be doing okay with the lowering of the calories. Anyway, before we end up with a bigger problem I thought I would ask for some advice. Thanks ahead of time. ... Guest guest
Hi , Maybe reducing the cals has canceled out the ketone lowering effect of reducing the ratio? And she may now need a lower ratio again on the present cal level. She will prob be burning body fat if the recent weight gain is starting to reverse, and most kids need a lower ratio till weight loss is 'over and done with' - like otherwise a bit of a double whammy - ketones from burning body fat on top of ketones from caloric fat in meals. If the trend continues, you might have to lower it down a bit more, the response to the apple juice seems to be pointing you in that direction? A real juggling act isn't it - for every action with this diet there is more often than not a REaction.... The fact that the ketones build by bedtime is kind of common on the diet, we get that all the time too, but I am not a fan personally of different ratios for diff meals - though I think some do have some success with this. What happens later on in the day is often a reflection of what has been happening earlier on though, well that is what our dietician says anyway, and with - high high ketones at night often sees lower ketones in the morn, like keeping steady on a more even keel is more deisrable, easier said than done though I know - been trying to achieve that here for, um nearly 3 years ----- Original Message ----- From: frumpymumma To: ketogenic Hello! Guest guest
Usually if ketones are very high and there are other signs like vomiting or lethargy, panting breathing it is suggested to lower the ratio, especially if giving apple juice helps and there are no seizures. I believe that the ratio should be lowered all day to give it equal. Since it takes several hours for the meal to be digested, sometimes what you are seeing is from what happened much earlier, maybe the day before.
