ABOUT THE PRESENTERS

(from slaw.com):

W. D. , Esq. is an attorney who represents children with special

educational needs. In second grade, Pete was diagnosed with learning

disabilities including dyslexia, dysgraphia and ADHD. He was fortunate - his

learning problems were identified early. Pete's determination to help

children grew out of his own educational experiences. After graduating from

Randolph Macon College with a degree in psychology, Pete worked as a

juvenile probation officer. In 1972, he was honored as Virginia's " Juvenile

Probation Officer of the Year. " During that time, Pete was also attending

evening college in a graduate psychology program at Virginia Commonwealth

University. In 1977, Pete graduated from T. C. Law School at the

University of Richmond. On October 6, 1993, Pete gave oral argument before

the United States Supreme Court in Florence County School District Four v.

, 510 U.S. 7 (1993). Thirty-four days later, the Court issued

a unanimous decision for .

Pamela Darr , M.A., M.S.W. is a psychotherapist who has worked with

children and families since the early 1970's. Her training and experience in

clinical psychology and clinical social work give her a unique perspective

on parent-child-school dynamics, problems, and solutions. Pam has written

extensively about raising, educating and advocating for children with

disabilities. She is the editor of The Special Ed Advocate newsletter.

Pete and Pam are the co-authors of slaw: Special Education Law

(1999), slaw: No Child Left Behind (2003), slaw: IDEA 2004,

(2005) and slaw: From Emotions to Advocacy, 1st and 2nd editions

(2002, 2005). They are the founders of the website www.wrightslaw.com .

TESTIMONIALS

from North Penn Parents & Professionals:

" As an attorney who did not specialize in education law, I found slaw

an excellent introduction to the rules I needed to understand, organized in

a way that made it easy to use when preparing for IEP meetings or

researching issues that arise with my child. More importantly, as a parent

I learned a style of advocacy very different from what I have learned in my

practice, that I have found very effective in working to achieve goals for

my child's education. " .Attorney-Parent

" I learned how to interpret educational evaluations and test scores.

Understanding measurable data helps me better determine my son's needs and

drives the IEP process.

..Teacher-Parent

" Great training! I learned nonconfrontational strategies to effectively

advocate for my child. I recommend it to all! "

....Social Worker-Parent

" By attending the slaw conference, I not only learned about the law,

but also gained the confidence to be a fully participating member on the IEP

team. " . Parent
