Hello! My name is and my 5 yr old daughter Cassidy just got a positive blood test for Celiac on Monday. We are scheduled for a 2 hr consult at the GI Clinic at Children's Hospital in Milwaukee on Aug. 21.

She's suffered stomachaches for ages now and finally a few weeks ago they drew blood and took x-rays. They found a blockage in her colon and started her on Polyeth Glyco. Other than that she's fairly healthy other than she's on Singulair for asthma and she broke her foot in 2 spots about 3 weeks ago.

I'm not sure if I'm going to become a SillyYak regular yet, I guess that will depend on her GI testing results and also the results of the blood test I had today for Celiac Disease. After researching the disease I have so many symptoms that my dr. has been trying to diagnose for months now with no luck I final went to her today and said Look, my daughter tested positive, I have these symptoms that go with Celiac.. test me to! She said "but we don't test for Celiac here that often. I replied with really, because I read that 1 in 133 Americans have it and the nurse rolled her eyes at me! How rude! lol.

Real Quick, I'm 36. Married to who is a Sr. Financial Analyst for a lg. corp. and after completing his Masters Degree last Dec. has now started going to school for his CMA. (Certified Managerial Accountant) I'm a SAHM to 3 girls. Keely 11, Cassidy 5 and Kaitlyn soon to be 3 next month. I was a 911 dispatcher hence the screen name and we live about 10 minutes north of Milwaukee, Wi.

I look forward to learning from all of you and hopefully making some great friends!

Anyone near Milwaukee?

Thank Esther. A few weeks ago my dr. took 4 viles of blood to try and figure out why I'm so weak. I'm just always exhausted and my legs constantly feel like I've run a marathon, even by noon. Today I can barely lift my arms over my head. I have headaches and oh on and on. The first round of testing came back neg. so I went today asking for the Celiac testing. They also did a round of rheumatoid testing too this time. If at first you don't succeed, try, try again!

You keep at it. You do what's best for you, your daughter, yourwhole family.

I don't know if I was tested for that or not. I do take a Super B Complex every day and it has Vit-C 300 mg, vit-B 15 mg, vit-b2 10 mg, niacin 50mg, B-6 5 mg, B-12 10 mg, pantothenic acid 20 mg, and iron 27 mg. So, I get b-12 there. I also take a couple E's a day because that seems to help too. Thanks for the advice and link Maureen!

Is your doctor testing you for a vitamin B12 deficiency? If it wasn't ordered originally, perhaps they can add it on - weak, achy legs are often caused by B12 problems - which are often caused by celiac. Here's a link to some more info on it: http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/diseases/facts/anaemiab12.htm(been there, lived that)Maureen

Welcome! Hope you stick around. Hope your DD feels much better

very soon. Scary that a little one could break a foot in two

places. I hope they do bone density tests for her now that she's

diagnosed with celiac.

Whenever I read something like what you wrote above, I count my

lucky stars that the doctors I've dealt with have been reasonable

and not rude. I've had three of my kids tested because first

degree relatives of a diagnosed celiac are at much higher risk

of having celiac. Three of my kids have shown signs so I've had

them tested. (So far, all three are negative on blood work.)

And the signs I've tested for are subtle, too: malformed teeth,

constipation, upset stomach after a restaurant meal. None of

them SCREAM " Classic Celiac - Test Yesterday " . No, none of them

fit " typical celiac " profile at all. And nor do I. But I have

reasonable doctors who have agreed with the need for testing

even with subtle symptoms.

You keep at it. You do what's best for you, your daughter, your

whole family.

Hi there, ,

I read you were leaving for up north...so I don't expect you to read this till Monday, but I just had to tell you, you're not the only woman married to a Financial Analyst here! :o) My husband, Steve, is only an Advanced Financial Analyst tho! He has no great desire to get an advanced degree. He works for EDS in Troy, MI...not quite around the corner from Milwaukee, but also on the Great Lakes...if that counts for anything! HA!

PS--my Silly Yak is our daughter, Gabby--3y 10m, 21.4 pounds, 35" tall--adopted from Kaliningrad, Russia at 25 months--October 2004.

Hello, especially to the Wisconsinites!

I'm also from Milwaukee, but now live in SoCal, since

1957! I go back to Wisconsin often, every year for

the pat ten years. This year I'll be going to the

CSA/USA celiac Conf in Green Bay, drive around some,

maybe Door County. I want to see some cousins in Mil.

Do you folks know the completely Gluten-Free store on

the south side of Milw? The name escapes me right

now. Everything in the store is G-F! The couple who

own it, or owned it when I was there a few years ago

are both celiacs. He was the first to be diagnosed,

and after they'd opened the store she was diagnosed!

I had to laugh when you said " Up North " is a Milw

term. Have you ever seen bubblers anywhere but

Milwaukee? There are some others, too, I'll post them

when I think of them. Maybe " washcloth " , but then

again, maybe not!

Glad to know a few other locals!

Well, " Up North " is used in other parts of the US - including NY State,

although it's usually 'upstate'.

If a 'bubbler' is a water fountain, they were common in New England many

years (not saying HOW MANY) ago.

We have washcloths in our bathroom (unless you mean dishrags).

OTOH, " overtown " is something I've not heard outside of NY State (going

overtown = going to the nearby town).

I too am from WI, but now live in MN. I also go back often and

really miss WI. That store I believe you are talking about is

called the Gluten Free Trading Company and it's great. I go there

every time I go home. I am actually going home again in two weeks.

YEA!! Most of my family all still lives in that area, except for

one of my sister's and I. My other sister, that is in the process

of being celiac tested finally, lives in Milwaukee. I always look

forward to going home because there are a lot more gluten free

options in that area than where we live.

When is that conference in Green Bay? We are also going back for a

week to 10 days in October and think we will make a stop in GB and

head up to Door County for a day or so. I love that area!!

Happy Gluten Free eating all!

The CSA/USA Celiac Conference is in Green Bay,

Wisconsin the first week-end in October. The official

conference is from Friday, Oct. 6th to Sunday, October

8th. It's at the Regency Suites Hotel and KI

Convention Center, 333 Main Street, Green Bay, WI

54301.

You can make reservations at www.regencygb.com or call

toll free . If you ask for the CSA

Conference rate it's $99 per night. Gotta call by

Sept 15th! Registration for the conference is $350.

for members,$450 for non-members. CSA does present a

good conference.

Call (877) CSA-4-CSA for more information.

They are also having " Kick-Off " tours on the Thursday

preceding the conference, which sound interesting if

you're a Packers fan. The info I have lists a lot of

local sights: botanical garden, railroad museum, zoo,

children's museum, and then Door County stuff.

I'm looking forward to this conference, and plan to

see a little more than just Green Bay.

I've been to 2 CSA/USA Conferences in the past and

they do a good job. They get good speakers, for the

most part, and of course all the food is gluten-free!

They generally have a big vendors display on the last

day so you can eat yourself silly before going back to

real life! Lots of samples to take home, too.

I hope some of you can go!

Hi Barbara, The GF store you mention is called The Guten-Free Trading Company. they recently moved from 6th and Lincoln to a much larger place located at 3114 S. Chase Avenue. I haven't been to the new place yet, I just haven't felt like traveling that far south. I get a monthly newsletter from them. As far as bubblers are concerned....I haven't seen them anywhere except around here!So what made you leave the Badger State? Winters too Cold?LOL. Michele p.s. Go Packers! Hi -

I left Milwaukee when I was pretty young, had just

graduated from nursing school a year before, and I was

going to see the world! I started in SoCal because I

had a friend who was going to drive here and I went

with her. I then applied for a post-grad. course in

Boston, but got married to a SoCal Psycho. After I

got married I was accepted to the post-grad course,

and knew I couldn't accept it. Darn! I should have

left the jerk.

But I stayed in SoCal, had 4 good kids (no celiacs so

far), and got divorced 21 years later.

I love SoCal now. I like to go back to WI and see

cousins, but I wouldn't live in that climate.

BTW, I have seen the world. I've traveled on every

continent except Antarctica, and I say I won't go

there because I don't like to be cold! Since my

diagnosis with Celiac disease, I have been to

Australia and New Zealand, Europe a couple of times,

and south America (Peru). I'm trying to plan trips to

Brazil and through the Panama Canal for sometime in

the next 1 1/2 years. That would be 2 separate trips.

I'd go hungry if I can't find g-f food, but that has

never happened.

Well, that's my story in a nutshell. I still have a

warm place in my heart for WI. I took my daughter

there 4 years ago, and took my 9 year old grandson 2

years ago. Trying to teach them a little family

history.

I guess I'll have to visit the g-f bakery in Pewaukee

when I'm there in Oct. This trip is getting longer

and longer!
