Guest guest
, We have been going through a similar weight problem. When Shan started the diet over 2 years ago she was anorexic after the first week. She was taking topamax at the time which is known to cause weight loss but the doctor had not taken that into consideration. We ended up raising her calories about 300 over what she was suppose to be at until the topamax was completely weaned. But, her calories still remained on the higher side. Slowly over the 2 years she gained weight. To us she looks great, but according to her growth chart (you can down load a Chinese/Vietnamese/American off the internet) her American growth chart her height is less than 5% and her weight is 85%. What threw us was that she has had an extended stomach since the beginning of the diet. As we worked with dietary issues (discontinued dairy due to intolerance) the distended stomach due to food issues must have resolved and became distended due to over weight. Lately she had been saying that her bottom felt big and her pants too tight. We've also had more seizures in the past several weeks which could be due to finally hitting that overweight mark that makes it difficult for the diet to control seizures. Several weeks ago I had dropped 50 calories but her weight remained the same. Over a week ago I dropped another 100 calories. I'm watching her ketones closely and watching her in regard to hunger/attitude etc. I've had to adjust the ratio according to the ketones because dropping the calories raised the ketones. I'm also watching her weight closely. Already Shan is feeling better in regard to her clothes feeling tight. But, she seems hungrier earlier than usual. I'm guessing that we may have to raise it 50 calories. I checked the ketogenic book and it says that if a child gains a pound per month (.45 kg) then their calories are 100 calories over what it should be. Rhonda I guess I probably use some sweetener too often to try to get her to drink. It is an ongoing problem - fluids. I am rethinking much of what I started doing at the beginning. She does drink green tea, as heard it was a remedy for constipation. She is not crazy about it. She does drink filtered water. I think I will just stick with it, and do as you do, save the sweetened for a treat. Today I took her in and I need to post on this, and get some help. I weighed her and she has gained over 4 lbs. since the end of June. I had thought her calories too high, but the dietitian did not agree, so things stayed as they were, except I lowered the ratio after the horror of the two days of seizures. Four pounds is a sickening amount for what was a 35 lb. little girl. Any ideas on how much, and how fast to reduce the calories? Got some biotin, but it must be far too strong, as says 1000mcg a tablet. So much to learn... and in a hurry, for her sake! Thanks for your timely response. I will back off on the stevia. Will look for natural sweeteners. We have a nice health food store locally that I can check out. Blessings..... , mum to who has gained over 4 lbs since the end of June!!! Yikes!
