I suggest you contact Alistair Lebach-Bourne in NZ. He has a Downs Syndrome

Protocol on his CD.

Down's Syndrome

Does anyone have any experience/suggestions with reducing the

complications associated with Down's Syndrome specifically in children?

I'm not sure what are the right words except that I personally know 4

children who have Down Syndrome and they lead extremely productive lives.

It really depends on how the parents handle the situation. My son took part

in an all-inclusive gymnastics class this winter where I met these lovely

children and my thinking was wow, they speak and communicate better than my

son who is cognitively okay but can't speak. So, what I'm trying to say

without insulting anyone is that it is not the end of the world to have a

child with Down Syndrome. It may sometimes be more challenging to have a

" normal " child that has oral/verbal apraxia. It is harder to deal with the

public and sometimes family members that don't understand Apraxia.

My two cents.

Please respond to

Hi all,

One of my closest friends just told me here newborn has Down's Syndrome.

I was wondering if anyone knows if ProEFA or any of the vitamins our

kids take for apraxia will help the speech of a child with Down's

Syndrome.

Also, does anyone have good advice about what to say to my friend? She

didn't know when she was pregnant and only found out at the hospital.

It's so hard for me to find the right words. We live far away, so I

haven't seen her. We have only spoken on the phone. Any advice would be

appreciated.

Thanks,

Becky McFarland

You should say to her what you would say to anyone who just gave birth:

Congratulations!!!

I had a healthy pregnancy and so I did not need an ultrasound or any

other tests. No one knew my son would be born with birth defects. I

was worried about his future but also elated at just having given

birth safely for the fourth time!!

I agree very much, as a nurse working with mom's whose plans for the perfect

pregnancy/baby don't work out I can say that a pity party is the last thing

anyone wants - they usually feel that way all on their own. All the usual

things that get said for new babies still apply - Congrats, Wonderful. Emphasize

the positive, that this was not what they were expecting but there is still joy

to be found. What you can do is be sure to keep up all the normal things you

would do anyway - gifts, cards etc.

Another aspect is to find out how severe the Down's is (maybe from someone

other than your friend) - there is a wide spectrum of severity, from life

threatening birth defects of heart and intestine to only a few physical

differences. You would certainly have a better chance of not saying the wrong

thing.

Depending on your level of friendship you may offer to do some internet

research on resources available to her in her area - it sounds like they were

not at all prepared for their surprise. This is something supportive that can be

done from afar.

Most women in her position feel like the world has stopped turning. We all can

remember when we first really realized something was definitely wrong with our

children.

And remember it is OK to say that you too are overwhelmed by the news and

don't know what to say - sometimes just listening and being supportive is much

more valuable than any great pearls of wisdom.

I believe we did have some group members two years ago whose children were DS,

and I think we still do. I can't see why EFAs wouldn't help them too. I know

supplementation of various kinds has helped DS kids reach their full potential,

but don't know any details.

Also, just happened to see this yesterday on another list:

http://www.loveandlearning.com/

There are some amazing testimonials there from parents of kids with DS.

Peace,

Becky when Mic was about 18 months autism showed its ugly face before that I had

him taking nutrrivene D, its a supplement especially for ds we were making grand

progress. He was talking and eating table food doing really good way ahead of the

charts we thought we had a high function ds child. Then autism came and in a

matter of 2 months we lost all words and Mic stopped eating any food except he

drank from a bottle which he still does today at 5.They are finding 1 out of 10

ds boys end up with autism too. The the nutrivene has fish oils and other

supplements I loved it but I cant get it down him anymore.

Mannatech has a product line and a protocol with

amazing results. Before and after pictures and data.

I'm not an active distributor, but I'm sure you can

find one in your area or in our group.

I have a 2-yr old with Down Syndrome and have researched quite a bit and found several things that, I believe, have and will continue to help.

The Mannatech products I'm still "out on a limb" about as I have yet been able to find anyone who can talk to me or send me directly any info. to support it's usefullness and there is only one testimony and the parent is not available to provide othe info. Though, I do know several parents who have used it and now do other things, who have all stated that they believe they were mislead.

In DS the metabolism is very messed up to do the extra chromosome which leads to destruction of brain cells, all of which are fine (per studies) as of a few months of age. Therefore, it's important to do as much as possible early on. Though, people begin protocols at later ages and claim great improvements, as well. One can (and should) get into understanding the metabolism of DS and learn what foods/ substances to avoid and what to do to stimulate and sustain brain function with food and supplements. A good site for this is http://www.einstein-syndrome.com/index.htm. Though, many of the parents who are on it's listserve are still supplementing with synthetic vitamins and aren't necessarily the most progressive, I have found it to be one of the best places to start and exchange info. It's very tough finding people who are doing much with DS (as a whole) who are making big differences. It's gleaning a little here and a little there; each modality making good progress in alieviating symptoms of DS. Hopefully, as a whole there will be greater outcomes when many modalities are sought.

I like Dr. Neil (in L.A.) with the NACD (National Association of Chilren with Disabilities) for some nutrition info. He has a ~5 yr old with DS (who I've met) and she is doing very well. One of best outcomes I've seen.

I like Dr. Theil for supplement info. He's a natropath in Central Calif. (Arroyo Grande) who has studied and written some research on DS, taking things to a higher level than much of the doc's recommending synthetic supplements have (though, they are few). He has studied the files of (now deceased) Dr. Warner who like Dr. Turkel received very good results with high dose vitamins and other therapies in the past decades.

Detox is highly important for these guys, because they do not get rid of toxins, including ones produced naturally by the body, well. We got excellent results from an energy detox we did in Texas recommended by the King Instutute (Kinginstitute.org).

Glandulars have been very helpful. I like the homeopathic ones.

We got excellent results in achieving catch up in growth using Barbra Brewitts homeopathic CSE's (Cell Signal Enhancers) along with glandulars; most importantly Growth Hormone and IGF. Though, she's been put out of business recently by a big homeopathic company and the FDA, becasue she was too good at what she does. One might be able to find some of her products on line at a health food distributor or e-bay. Hopefully we're see her products again, at least in some form.

Good cranial work is a help as well. Especially early on, though it is helpful at later ages as well. One of the best, I know of is Dr. Dean Howell. (888-252-0411 or http://www.drdeanhowell.com/) who travels around the country and trains others in the technique as well. Hopefully, he will soon receive grant money to do a large group of kids w/ DS in Venezuela.

A very good neurodevelopmental program (not traditional speach and physical therapies) is absolutely necessary to stimulate brain pathways. We use CANDO, with Kane (hope-future.org). Her organization is very progressive and does lots of research always improving programs with latest available info. It's based on evaluating the child and providing therapies for the family to do at home. Evaluations take place 3 x's a year with assistance, as necessary in between.

The best speech therapist is SRJ with Talk tools (http://www.talktools.net/cgi-bin/talktools.storefront) in Tucson. She has a traveling clinic. This therapy is a must for developing speech, which so far is the best indicator for outcomes (per Dr. Leichtman, one of 3 world leading doc's who sees hundreds of DS patients annually). Unfortunately Dr. Leichtman is a bit behind in his recommended protocals, but we saw him once.

Energy work, I have found to be highly important. Am new to QXCI and want to do more with that. We got several homeopathic supplements id'd from QXCI evaluations that I believe have been helpful, however, our homeopath believes they detract from the effectiveness of the classical remedy he is on, so we are taking a break from them except for the thyroid glandular. We have been using TKM (The Ki Method) for energy work which is not well enough known, but highly successful at acheiving results I have not heard achieved by any other modalities (kinginstitute.org). Glenn King has actually worked on an adult with DS, who was institutionalized and needed a straight jacket and by the time Dr. King saw him last, he was living on his own and had achieved black belt in Karate. We've been doing this therapy since my son was 4 months of age and was able to cancel a hernia surgery (w/in 2 weeks of beginning), his heart holes healed "unusually fast", his rare blood condition which has an exceptionally high death/disease rate has been kept at bay (directly attributable to TKM sequences). With all the health issues he's had (congenital hypothyroidism, blocked intestines, obstructive sleep apnea, born 4 lbs and not breathing on his own and in need of blood transfusions) he is doing exceptionally well developmentally. His therpists at home are sharing all we do with their other clients because of his results and spend most of his sessions (which we have very rarely, usually only to share info) gleaning what we are doing to achieve the results we have achieved.

It is extremely important to check for thyroid problems (typically hypo). Much of the symptoms of DS are exaserbated by uncorrected thyroid. Homeopathy works great for this.

There are good classical homeopathic remedies targeted to DS. The one we use has slipped my mind. I want to say Bi Carb. We use Dr. Ullman in Seattle, who studies under a Indian homeopath who has achieved good results with classical homeopathy and D.S..

So far, I haven't found just one thing that is the answer. I am definately treading new ground. Hopefully the answers will be clearer in years to come, maybe even preventing the disease altogether.

By the way, if someone knows they are pregnant with a baby w/ DS outcomes have been improved significantly by taking certain supplements and/or doing energy work while pregant.

Sorry for the looonnnngggg post. This I am just passionate to get the information out. I hope if there are others who have seen good results with other modalities such as QXCI that they will share as well.

Before and after pictures and data. Siri

Siri,

I'm a Mannatech distributor; as such I'm aware of their poster

girl for Down's, but I think they had a large element of luck in

that case too.

Mannatech products don't do much for disorders that are caused or

exacerbated by extremely high oxidative stress. This is what

prematurely ages Downs patients and also causes accelerated

degeneration in diabetics.

What the body needs most of and is in the shortest supply in an

oxidative stress condition is glutathione, the body's master

antioxidant and detoxifier. Every cell makes its own from

precursors. Other antioxidants including Mannatech' bush plums do

not satisfy the body's glutathione requirement, and when

glutathione is low there is always disease even when the other

antoxidants are plentiful.

Mannatech merchants commonly point out that their product tends

to stimulate glutathione production. That's fine, but glutathione

requires precursors and Mannatech does not provide the

precursors, just the stimulus.

The rate-limiting factor for glutathione production is cysteine

peptides, which are delivered best by cold-processed whey. More

than 90% of the glutathione is needed inside the cell to prevent

mitochondrial damage, premature cell death and aging, and that's

where the precursors are delivered.

hi Jill,

thank you very much for your long and very informative

post!

I do not have a child with DS but do have twins with

learning and behavioral problems.

A modality you may want to consider also is BodyTalk.

I have learned a great deal about BodyTalk and very

intrigued by it. Go to bodytalksystem.com for more

information...lots of clips and articles to research.

Dr. Veltheim has been working with a client who has

Frederick's Ataxia. This client was in late stages of

the disease and has made miraculous progress...lifting

weights and I think almost to ghe point of walking

again. No documentation of anyone ever getting better

otherwise , to my knowledge.

Duncan Crow,

Thank you so much for your information. Is it okay if I forward this to a group of parents supplementing their children with DS?

By the way, for anyone treating DS, there is a problem with the pathways in DS relating to glutathione for sure and this is why I didn't want to over supplement here (and one of the reasons I went into energy work). In summary, as I remember, the pathways being out of balance, due to the extra chromosome, can actually result in overstimulating destruction of brain function by increasing production of hydrogen peroxide if given too much cysteine or glutathione. I'm a bit rusty on this. But think this is pretty accurate.

Sure, go ahead and use my comment.

Can you provide cites for your comment of excess glutathione

increasing peroxide?

I ask because glutathione is ackowledged to the be the primary

quencher of peroxide in the body and of the peroxidation of fats;

that's why we use it extensively for any kind of oxidative stress

disorder. For more on this reaction as it applies to Downs

Syndrome, a search PubMed on ( downs glutathione peroxide ) shows

Downs is a disease of low glutathione and high oxidation.

Glutathione is useless as an oral supplement because it is

digested like any other protein, and even when given by injection

it doesn't enter the cells where more than 90% is needed.

The amino acid cysteine is a toxin unless it's bound to another

amino acid as a peptide; this is the form that occurs naturally

in undenatured whey, the preferred method for increasing

glutathione.

Anyway, the cysteine you were giving causes direct damage (even

as NAC). Further, if oral glutathione is the form you were giving

it wasn't doing anything at all and that explains the continued

peroxidation in your client.

Methinks yes, you are rusty on the subject as you indicated, and

another look at the research is warranted.
