Guest guest
Thank-you We are trying a " relaxed Keto/Atkins Diet AGAIN Zara has seizures on a STRICT Keto diet and STRICT ATKINS diet so we are in the experiment stage to see what works She is at a point where the strict Keto meals were making her miserable--at the age and level of understanding food issues We are incorporating some tastier foods--keeping carbs low, fats high and slanted protein I am not sure if the KETOSIS , LOW B.G., HIGH FATS, limited calories--etc...you know--a combination of all of these--is what helps with seizure control So- since meds & surgical procedures are not an answer--we need to find a point of her staying on a restricted diet--and keeping seizures away--wish it were so simple At least we know we can -so far--tolerate less of a keto ratio than the dietitian thought-- Zara is 10 yrs old--what an impressionable age --especially with 4 siblings We believe the quality of life plays an important role in her seizure control I am really researching the Atkins approach with CREAM-- Cream seems to stabilize her --the higher fats She even tolerates Atkins ice cream with cream blended into a " shake " keeping a keto ratio!! How is ? Best to you & your family Sandi & Zara
Guest guest
Hi Sandi We buy it in a tub, but originally they started as ice cream on sticks, (childhood fave of mine - yum) 2/3 vanilla ice cream, top 1/3 is raspberry jello, (or jelly as we call it here, but I think the US term jelly refers to our 'jam' ) the whole ice cream is coated in chocolate. Then it came out in a tub form, with all the ingredients kinda 'swirled' in together, the chocolate in the form of grated choc bits mixed in with ice cream and patches of jello. The low carb choc I use allows about 1.2 gms choc grated in, doesn't sound much, but it goes quite a long way. likes a bit of banana sliced on top, if he didn't have this added, he could have even more chocolate. He went out to a friend's house yesterday and took a meal with him, and it was one of the few times that another kid was actually jealous of what he was eating ----- Original Message ----- > What is jelly-tip ice cream? > Sandi
Guest guest
has got a bit more demanding meal wise recently too, same deal - sees siblings eating this and that, keeps asking when he can have it too etc.... That has prompted me to move out of my comfort zone menu wise, trying for a bit more variety, mainly his 2 main meals at lunchtime and 4 pm (seems happy with the same breakfast and supper) - and reluctantly adding things like aspartame, tidbits of gluten etc, to give greater variety. The last thing I want/need right now is for the diet to be working, but him not wanting to stay on it....so I know what you are saying, and an 'in between' type diet sounds pretty tempting. However, if poss, I am leaving any experiments like that for at least another 6 mths, we just passed 's 6 mth seizure free anniversary 2 days ago, (so in answer to your question, he's doing fine so although a huge milestone for him, it is still not where I feel comfortable changing toooo much. Wonder if I ever will???? Let's hope we get to find out one day. Like you, I have no real idea which 'formula' it is that helps him, is it his BS - which has remained pretty stable, is it his (now) good strong ketones, fat source, even which med, if any, or - has his seizure syndrome finally burnt itself out....nice thought, but I can't let myself dream that quite yet His growth has slowed to a standstill again though poss the diet/topmax combo, not sure, but weighing one thing against another, I guess we can live with that. He is hovering between the 65th and 75th height percentile, so due to him being so tall when he started the diet, (was 90-95th percentile way back then, sigh) he is getting away with it. For now anyway. How is Zara's growth? Is she keeping up with her growth curve? Do you see any difference when you switch from strict keto? Another reason I'd like to swing more Atkins way is to see if his height will start moving again, but frankly - too damn scared to yet... ----- Original Message ----- > Thank-you > We are trying a " relaxed Keto/Atkins Diet AGAIN > Zara has seizures on a STRICT Keto diet and STRICT ATKINS diet so we are in > the experiment stage to see what works > She is at a point where the strict Keto meals were making her miserable--at > the age and level of understanding food issues > We are incorporating some tastier foods--keeping carbs low, fats high and > slanted protein > I am not sure if the KETOSIS , LOW B.G., HIGH FATS, limited > calories--etc...you know--a combination of all of these--is what helps with seizure control > So- since meds & surgical procedures are not an answer--we need to find a > point of her staying on a restricted diet--and keeping seizures away--wish it > were so simple > At least we know we can -so far--tolerate less of a keto ratio than the > dietitian thought-- > Zara is 10 yrs old--what an impressionable age --especially with 4 siblings > We believe the quality of life plays an important role in her seizure control > I am really researching the Atkins approach with CREAM-- > Cream seems to stabilize her --the higher fats > She even tolerates Atkins ice cream with cream blended into a " shake " > keeping a keto ratio!! > > How is ? > Best to you & your family > > Sandi & Zara
