Guest guest
Speaking of coming off the diet, has anyone noticed behavioural issues with weaning?? We are down to 2.5:1 now, will move to 2:1 on Monday. I know Jess definitely wants off this diet NOW (which actually helps me because I can tell myself I know I am doing the right thing when I start to worry about the sanity of what we are doing) and she has actually started cheating (on 2 occasions in the past few weeks), something she never did in over 6 years on the diet. But my question is about behaviour not related to food/eating. I have definitely seen a disintegration in her behaviour since we added Keppra in December but it seems worse lately. More emotional, irritable, doesn't take much to push her over the edge and when she goes, watch out! Anybody seen anything like this with weaning the diet? Or am I just facing the start of adolescence? ) , 's mom Bill Barber wrote: > Since going to a .5:1 ratio and not seeing any urine ketones, we > thought > that maybe we were " off " the diet. > > I was measuring with the scale and keeping calories limited. Guest guest
, We have tried to wean Shan, age 9, twice off the diet and had similar issues. We actually got her completely weaned and within 3 day she was climbing the walls. The second time were able to keep her off a month before she was climbing the walls and had excessive mood swings. I attribute it to carb build up along with increased seizure activity. The first wean we gave her all the fruit and vegetables she wanted. The second wean we tried to limit her carbs to 20. The first time we weaned her we put her back into ketosis but the mood swings persisted. I then limited her carbs to 20 and the " climbing the walls " and excessive mood swings resolved. After the second unsuccessful wean, all issues resolved when I put her back into minimum ketosis (carbs already low). Your daughter's behavior may be reflecting to too much carbs. I have also adapted the diet to the ADD diet. Shan is not diagnosed with ADD but several months ago she was showing many signs of ADD in spite of low carbs. I did research on the internet on the ADD diet and found that some kids can be very sensitive to foods high in salicylates. At the time I was giving her a lot of almonds which are extreme high in salicylates. I dropped those immediately, as well as some other high foods, and within 24 hours I saw a big change for the better. If you are interested in a list of high salicylates foods, I did a google search and found them listed under ADD diet. There is another parent in this group who wants to learn more about the ADD diet. I'm going to do a little research and hopefully post a response today. Guest guest
, We had horrible behavioral issues with Keppra before we started the diet. I posted about our exprience last Sept. -- not long after I joined the group. Both you and I were part of a discussion about meds and behavior. My message is 27186 posted 9/25/03. Some replies follow. Based on our experience, I suspect Keppra -- especially if she didn't behave this way prior to starting it 6 months ago. I can't really think of anything that would happen when weaning the diet that would cause a big change in emotions. Starting the diet -- going from non-ketogenic state to ketogenic makes some kids feel yucky and they have emotional issues which usually subside after they adjust to the ketones on board. Maybe Jess is just SO excited to get off the diet (anticipating the foods she will get to eat once she IS off) that her emotional control isn't its best right now??? Just a thought. How is she doing seizure wise with the wean? Guest guest
We did have a bit of 'behaviour' - angry outbursts etc. But as you say I don't know whether it was usual teenage stuff or the Keppra or the weaning or a combination of all of them. I think in Rohan's case it's more to do with Keppra than anything else. Things are a bit more settled now (or shouldn't I say these things out loud!)
