Guest guest
Rhonda, We give unlimited meats, cheeses, eggs (which he hardly eats)unlimited veggies (no corn, beans potatoes etc the high carb veggies), jello. We also give him unlimited butter and cream and nuts and essentially push the fats to the extent that he will allow. He eats melted butter with everything. He is so used to it that he won't eat without it. We go to restaurants and order him a grilled meat (steak or chicken usually) and bring along his veggies and butter for them to melt. His ketones are moderate to large every night and he does great with it. It keeps his appetite suppressed. I always know that if he is getting hungry he must not have good ketosis. The key for us to be successful with this is to rotate foods. He goes on hot dog binges for 2 weeks but then you can tell he's losing his interest with them so we switch. He eats alot of salmon, tilapia, steak, pork chops and chicken on the grill with grilled veggies and butter. He always has opocorn with butter before he goes to bed and we give him a 1 cup serving with 2T butter. I really think the key to our success with it is that it really is following the keto protocol with the food choices. We are really doing a keto like diet without weighing the food. We get into trouble when we add the other low carb food because he stops eating the other stuff and his ketones go down. It is a vicious cycle for us that we have finally accpeted that he will probably be on this diet for a long time. The alternative is seizures and we don't want to go down that road. We are blessed that we have control with the diet. Does your son determine how much fat he is going to eat or does he eat just whatever you give him (you in a sense controlling how much fats he eats)? We don't weigh it but he gets it with every meal. Butter is his " gravy " as he calls it and he gets upset if we don't have it. His snacks have cream in them so we're covered in that reagrd to. We make cream popsicles and ice cream with jello and sug free pudding. Perhaps our next step is to allow unlimited protein, limit the carbs to 20-23g, and make sure she gets a set amount of fat. The fats we are using are olive oil (cold pressed, extra virgin) butter, cheese and nuts. As long as we are using various types of foods that contain both fats and carbs (nuts and cheese) it may be a while before we can get away from using a meal planner and calculating. Have you ever tried to just take away the scale and use the same foods while still adding the fat?? What carbs are you using?? Are you using any net carb products or atkins baking stuff?? Keep me posted and good luck to you!
Guest guest
Rhonda-- Can you explain more about the ADD diet or is there a website?? The silliness/impulsiveness is what we deal with almost daily. Kathy/WI >When we tailored the diet to the ADD diet all immediately improved. Guest guest
We are trying a Keto-Atkins approach My daughter was on a strict keto diet for 3 yrs She has never been totally seizure free--even with all the tweaking SO---at 10 yrs old and very tired of the Keto diet--we decided to TRY another approach After 3 yrs we know all the aspects of the keto diet play a role in seizure control BUT what is the important part of the diet KETOSIS--LOW B.G.---HIGH FATS---RATIO of pro-carbs & fats?????? WELL----we know she needs ketones BUT tolerates sm-mod & B.G. plays a role with her seizure control---so we need to limit fruits and high glycemic veggies &--although she would rather skip the cream--the high fats in butter and cream--NOT oils help with seizure control At one point of increase seizures on the Keto diet--we found high dairy fats helped more than fats with oils--even if the ratio was exact SO---We are starting (yes--just this week)--with a keto ratio of 1.0-1 & 1.5-1 we are counting carbs and fats --but allowing the protein to be higher --when she has an Atkins product--and limiting calories When I calculate her meal I always get the ratio to work and the high fats and carbs at or below the value and protein at or above the value--keeping calories at the set value SHE is soooo happy because she gets a variety and more food she likes--even though it is a combo of atkins and keto When we tried the atkins--with carbs at 10 and not limiting protein and calories within reason--but not increasing fats --her seizures were more out of control After backing to a strict keto we are trying the combo-diet this time This is NOT through the dietitian--but our Neuro is fine with us trying things --he is their for us She tolerates the Atkins ice cream, breakfast bars & cereal---ALL with added cream--and POPCORN with butter The lo-carb breads, rolls & bagels turn a calculated meal into a tolerable meal-- Hopefully one day to switch to a more Atkins diet--BUT right now she needs a little more restrictive diet This is NOT for every child--and all the diets need to be done with Neuro/docs assistance Best to all of you Please keep me posted --on the Atkins approach--I learn from other parents Thank-you Sandi Zara--Keto-Atkins Kid
Guest guest
Carolyn We did the keto diet for 2 years with good control mostly on 2:1. Very short time on 4:1 due to getting overly ketotic. At the end of the 2 year time, he began cheating and obsessing about " normal " food. He was digging through the trash. We tried to take him off the diet and his seizures resumed full force so his neuro told us that we should try a " loose " Atkins diet with some carbs. He still did not have good seizure control so we had to " tighten up " to a ketogenic like Atkins diet. He has had the same control as on the 2:1 with his current diet. I think could have been successful with some low carb products but the problems we always face are that if we offer him a low carb choc bar for instance, he won't go back to the homeade cream bar. So, yes this is under the guidance of Dr. Chez his neurologist and also has been tried by Hopkins as well. there was an article floating around recently about Hopkins and their success with Atkins. Good luck to you and if you have any other questions, let me know,
