Guest guest
Thanks! We started the fast on Sunday and fed Isaac today. So far, although hard to do, everything has gone well. He is heavily ketotic and we've had about a 70% reduction in seizure activity. He is absolutely exausted and is very weak and probably overdrugged. He's not wanting to drink his water but he loves that (teeny, tiny, weeny bit of) eggnog! I can't wait to seem with his energy back and some of the drugs taken off of him. In spite of all that is going on with him he still seems somehow more 'with it' than he has in a long while. I think the strangest thing in all of this is the almost eerie calmness in Isaacs body. I'm not sure what to make of it! Could this be normalcy emerging? I just hope he is able to walk again. That is what I want more than anything. I don't care if he has seizures just please not the constant barrage that so badly interferes with his functioning and quality of life. Thanks for answering kristansmommy -- hope she is well Kathleen > > Hi > > I've never belonged to an online anything before but I can see the > > beniet already. Guest guest
Kathleen, Having a child who is suddenly much more alert and with it seems to be one of the most common effects that people notice when starting the diet. That, plus the decrease in seizures bodes well for your long term success on the diet. When things go haywire, as they may well do, remember these first few days as instant inspiration. You have to be careful about exess ketosis at the beginning and also look out for dehydration. After that you may see reflux and constipation and/or diarrhea. These are all common on the diet. Keep records of everything and watch weight and height closely as the correct amount of calories is hard to judge and can affect the success of the diet. While you are in the hospital, if is a good time to read and re-read Dr. Freeman's book as just about everything you need to know is in there, but it can be a challenge sometimes to find the details that you need. At the beginning of the diet our daughter changed her behaviours so radically that it didn't seem like the same person! Congratulations on a successful start to the diet. Guest guest
Kathleen, that's great news. I hope the seizures keep going down and then stop. Wishing Isaac continued success on the diet. Guest guest
Dear Kathleen Your little one is experiencing what I saw in my dear daughter. Developmentally delayed is the term used for her. She is five, going on three. HOWEVER, since the diet she has perked up, is moving right ahead and learning, her speech and language have taken great strides and she is happy. She wakes up with a smile. I know she feels good. And, she has only been on it five weeks. She is not yet seizure free, but the shackles are falling off her brain. She is more alert, she is learning, and she has a quick smile. And, potty training was at a standstill, but no more. Before it was if I remembered to put her on the potty - now she asks to be helped on. You are just beginning to experience the benefits. Isaac will do well. The journey has begun. Blessings... I will say a prayer for him! Guest guest
Carolyn, Keep after the doctors and nurses about his condition. He may be getting dehydrated and need an IV. He could be toxic on meds as they seem to work differently when in ketosis. You could try giving a tablespoon of apple juice and see if that helps with the lethargy by cutting the ketones slightly. Good luck, Bill caronath wrote: > That worry me a lot because we are at Day 5 at hospital ant my son > doesn't drink at all and doctors don't worry....I try to give him > gelly water but he's too weak to open his mouth.... > > Carolyn >
