Guest guest Posted May 24, 2006 Report Posted May 24, 2006 I've recently heard from someone in NY and TX that early intervention extends to age 5, and that preschool aged kids can get language services separate from the school system, even in their home, until Kindergarten. I hadn't heard of this, only that children transition from EI to preschool at age 3. Anyone from NY or TX receiving or know of these services? Quote
Guest guest Posted May 24, 2006 Report Posted May 24, 2006 No, in NY Early Intervention just goes up to age 3. You can get an extension for 6 months depending on your child's birthday - we did that because EI pays for digital hearing aids whereas the school district won't. At age 3, the child transitions to CPSE services (Committee on Preschool Special Education) which is run by the school district. My son is 4 and receives services that way. Guest guest Posted May 24, 2006 Report Posted May 24, 2006 Hey - I'm in LA but I was just told today (my first EI meeting - wahoo!) that the school will begin testing him at 2 years and 2 months. Although EI in our state ends at 3 years he can begin getting services such as speech therapy and stuff through the school at three years old instead of having to wait until he is in the school program. I wonder if that is what they mean? Guest guest Posted May 24, 2006 Report Posted May 24, 2006 I am in Texas and the cutoff for EI is 3, then the school system takes over. We got at home services only until age 3. Then my son went to the school's preschool program for children with disabilities from age 3 until now. His last day of school is tomorrow and he will be mainstreamed Kindergarten next year. (Exiting but scary). Guest guest Posted May 24, 2006 Report Posted May 24, 2006 In Gergia there is an agency called Georgia Pines and they serve deaf and visually disabled kids from 0-5. Most of the 3-5 year olds are served by their local school systems though. Quote
Guest guest Posted May 24, 2006 Report Posted May 24, 2006 Does he receive services in the preschool setting, or at home? No, in NY Early Intervention just goes up to age 3. Guest guest Posted May 24, 2006 Report Posted May 24, 2006 Both!! He has multiple services since he has low tone as well as the hearing loss. He gets speech therapy and physical therapy at home, and he gets OT and a SEIT (special education itinerant teacher) at preschool. This was largely for scheduling convenience. Sometimes the speech therapist works with him at preschool too. Bonnie > > Does he receive services in the preschool setting, or at home? > > > > No, in NY Early Intervention just goes up to age 3. Guest guest Posted May 25, 2006 Report Posted May 25, 2006 I remember reading about a change in the law that allows EI up until age 5, but I don't know how it was worded. Perhaps it allows states to use EI up until then. It does not appear that VA is doing up until age five. in Manassas, VA > No, in NY Early Intervention just goes up to age 3. Guest guest Posted May 25, 2006 Report Posted May 25, 2006 I'm in TX too. My daughter had EI til she was three at home and then the teacher started coming to her Mother's morning out once a week and then to the Elementary school. She will be mainstreamed in the Fall also. The teacher will come once a week and pull her out when she's in Kindergarten also. Guest guest Posted May 26, 2006 Report Posted May 26, 2006 , I'm in Illinois and here early intervention (EI) ends on the childs third birthday. There are school sponsored preschools where children needing services are sent after that age. But I also know of a few moms whose children were recieving speech services in EI and and at 3 did not want to send them to preschool. In these cases the moms wanted to homeschool, so the school district continued to provide speech services to them at the school. Others dream things that never were and ask why not. G.B Shaw --------------------------------- Sneak preview the all-new Yahoo.com. It's not radically different. Just radically better. Quote
Guest guest Posted May 26, 2006 Report Posted May 26, 2006 I believe EI here in NC ends at age 3, also. He was in the auditory oral preschool. The county paid transport but the school for the deaf paid the rest. It may have changed now, this was when he was 5 and he is 12 now. Guest guest Posted June 20, 2006 Report Posted June 20, 2006 Sara, In California, services are provided under an IFSP until the child is 3 through the early intervention program (in our case it was through the County Office of Education), and from 3+ through your local school district (under an IEP). I don't check this group very often but if you have any more questions, please put " Listen-Up to Rajeev " in the subject and it will get forwarded to me.
