Face up to your responsibilities. I am afraid you are going to find

yourself in a heap of trouble here as most of us that post are females! :-)

There are ways around any financial hardship. Her older child can qualify

for all sorts of medical assitance if you both really aren't well off. No

one can really afford to have kids if you do the math. It dosen't work that

way. You learn to adjust and trade off the things that aren't as important

as sticky jelly kisses and dirty, chubby little arms around you neck and

baby snuggles late at night.

Preston,

This may be a little harsh for you, but I have a 23 year old son and this

is EXACTLY what I would say to him! How many times must this happen before

you learn your lesson? Be a man, take responsibility for your own actions.

It is natural for a parent to want to be with their children. So, by

reading your note below, you mentioned three children. OK then...it's

alright for you to have your daughter but not alright for your girlfriend

to have her daughter? Is that because she has CF? Nobody makes 12,000 a

year anymore. There's lots of government help for you to go back to

school, even a trade school has grants. Get an education, be a man and do

the right thing. I raised my son alone, by myself at 17 years old. His

father was like you, a real nice guy. Loved me, but was 21 years old and

couldn't take responsibility. Well, my son is graduating from college this

year with his teaching certificate. He paid for his own education and has

taken out loans when he's had to. He has given blood to pay for books. I

have three other children, two in college and one with CF. He will be

teaching young men like you on how to keep it wrapped and what happens when

you don't. He knows his father, but has no relationship with him. He

can't forgive him for not being a man and doing the right thing. His

father now has three other children and his second wife left him. What a

loser in life! When my son walks up to get his degree this year, his

father will never know what he has missed out on for 23 years! But hey,

that's his loss and my gain.

All the advice given was true, but I think Preston will think twice about

asking us for any again. What do the rest of you think? He was probably

hoping someone would lean in his favor, NOT!!!!!!!!!!

Hi ,

When Elliot was born he had very high indirect bili rubin count. He tested

positive for CF on 3 newborn screens but the doctors believed this was

because he had liver problems. His liver enzymes were and still are pretty

high.

Elliot had two liver biopsies and an open surgery to look at his bile ducts

and liver...all before 4 weeks of age.

Elliot was finally diagnosed with CF after the GI said " if it was my son I

would send him to this guy. " This " guy " is a pediatric liver doctor whose

special interest and research is liver disease in kids with cf.

He believes that Elliot had a blockage in his extrahepatic bile ducts. He

believes this blockage was most likely the thick secretions caused by cf. He

also believes that when they did surgery on Elliot and filled his gallbladder

with fluid somehow this flushed out his bile ducts and opened them up. Prior

to this Elliot did not have any color to his stools...was unable to release

bile out of his liver.

And now his liver is still enlarged and scarred but remarkably better. Our

last visit showed the size of his liver to be reduced by about 2 cm.

His symptoms were: pale stools, enlarged liver, hard liver, small

gallbladder, green jaundice, yellow jaundice and high bili rubin. I have been

told not to panic about his high liver enzymes. So much was going on that

these were the last of our worries. But it seems to me the Doctor said

something about his liver working harder than others to digest, etc., so that

could be the reason for the liver enzymes staying high.

Hope this helps.

Hi ! Welcome. I have a 15 month old, , who was diagnosed at 10

months.

What do you mean by liver " involvement " ? I'm curious, because Jake's liver

enzyme values have come back elevated twice now, and they want him to see a

GI in January. The CF docs are very nonchalant about this, but of course, it

worries me.

This is a great list...I'm still quite new to all of this, but learning

lots, thanks to everyone here!

We had a chat a couple of times but I don't think there has been one for a

while. We should schedule one again soon!

My son's liver enzymes suddenly elevated when he was 2.5 months old, and

about to go home from the NICU for the 1st time. They put him on a daily

dose of " Actigall " by mounth twice daily, and the enzymes went back to

normal over the course of a few months. He has been kept on the med for 3

years since, and no problems! Thought that might help you!

Dear Sue,

We have tried to eradicate it but to no avail. It came back after an

absence of 4 yrs. I don't believe there is anything you can do to avoid it

but I know where it lurks and try to get to avoid it...

the soil, down the drain pipes, in swimming pools (mainly in the changing

rooms), saunas, spa pools (particuarly bad), showers. Basically anwhere

that is moist and damp. I make sure he washes his hands all the time,

especially when coming in from outside. Hope this helps.

Dear ,

A few years back n tested positive for pseudomonas and I thought " great

now what is going to happen? " Good attitude huh! But you hear so much it's

sort of scary. anyway, He was put first on tobramycin (sp?) that we had to

dilute with sterile water and put in his nebulizer. Then Tobi became popular

and they switched him to that - which was a lot easier. Anyway after a while,

maybe a couple of sputums he no longer tested positive for it, and hasn't

since. The doctor took him off Tobi to see how he does and we'll see about

his next sputum. I was nervous about no Tobi (he was elated!) One less thing!

We are just keeping a close eye on him and making sure he does his vest for

the total time (he has a tendency to cut off a few minutes when no one is

looking).

so, at least for n, pseudomonas so far hasn't caused much problem. I

get scared I'll hex it by saying that but hopefully it will stay that way for

a long time. I hope it goes as well for you guys.

Hi Susie,

Thanks for your reply. It really put a smile on my face. I hope to have a

course of action set by tomorrow. Elliot is only 10mths and until now all

his problems have been liver related. Last week we found out that Elliot's

enlarged liver had reduced in size by about 2cm and we were so excited!!! So

this unexpected news comes as a real blow. Although I know I will feel

different in the morning. More positive that is.

Thanks again it is really nice to hear about other peoples tales.

Mom to Elliot

ps good luck to n being off the medication

Nothing you can do to prevent it. But make sure your clinic treats it

agressively and that way it may go. We use the Danish treatment here

(although were in Australia) as they have the least amount of pseudo. and

good survival rates. We use three months inhaled colistin and three months

oral ciproxin.

My son didn't appear upset at the time about the fertility issue (fertility

and infertility are much kinder and more medically acurate terms than

sterility; and indeed, you'll find that most medical professionals are now

avoiding the word " sterile " ).

We raised our children to carry a positive attitude -- the glass is always

full until a mishap empties the glass a bit. knows until a test proves

otherwise that there is a chance he could father a child " the old fashioned

way, " just as he knows if he can't, that there are other methods. At 17,

likely he was thinking about how to get laid, not how to lay eggs :)
