Guest guest Posted March 22, 2006 Report Posted March 22, 2006 This is wonderful! Our son's name is too, and I distinctly remember how excited I was when he finally was able to say his name. Best of luck to you and your son. You sound like a wonderfuly Mom and excellent advocate for him. Best, Pam O'Connor [ ] said his name is 3 years old and I have never been able to get him to say his own name. Well he said it tonight while we were laying down to go to bed. I don't think I've ever been more happy or proud as I was then. He still doesn't quite understand that that's his name and that that is for him cause I'd ask him what's your name and he'd say Mommy, I'd say no that's my name and point to myself and then I'd say whats YOUR name and point to him and he'd say ANDU LOL. At this point I don't care, I'll work on the specifics later. Ok, I'm done gushing, I just had to share. Leighanne (One proud Mommy) --------------------------------- Bring photos to life! I cried. Every new word is cause for celebration and saying one's NAME is just HUGE. Good for ! Guest guest Posted March 22, 2006 Report Posted March 22, 2006 How Wonferful Leighanne! Have you tried using actual photos of people in your family with white labels with names written on them to help him understand what name porper belongs to whom? Our little guys are such visual learners that sometimes SEEING the picture with the name really helps. Again, congratuations! Guest guest Posted March 22, 2006 Report Posted March 22, 2006 MY grandson is 3 yrs 10 mon. he has not been able to say his name either. I have been trying but nothing. But tell you something since i started him on the omega 3,6,9 fish oil. his vocabulary has increased by 8 words. he still says Ma before doing a sign language gesture but then he can be playing w/a teddy bear and all of a sudden he just says words, like my baby, bubbles, wow, come on. when before there was nothing and he has also started to babble alot and the drewling has decrease alot since the fish oil which was last monday. We are so proud to have come across The fish oil article. Have faith. God Bless you and your family. Grandama Dalia for Pam O'Connor <pamo@...> wrote: This is wonderful! Guest guest Posted March 22, 2006 Report Posted March 22, 2006 This is such a wonderful moment for a mommy, isn't it? And one day, just like the day we had last fall, your child will say very slowly and clearly, " I love you, Mommy, " while grinning from ear-to-ear. It took us until well into second grade to get there, but get there we did. There are still a lot of lags and difficulties with expression, but each day shows improvements. Hang in there and enjoy every blessed moment. Carol C Quote

Guest guest Posted March 22, 2006 Report Posted March 22, 2006 How wonderful!!! I found this little story on a web site and thought I would share it with you. How blessed we are to have these children.... The Special Mother Most women become mothers by accident, some by choice, a few by social pressures and a couple by habit. This year nearly 100,000 women will become mothers of handicapped children. Did you ever wonder how mothers of handicapped children are chosen? Somehow I visualize God hovering over earth selecting his instruments for propagation with great care and deliberation. As He observes, He instructs His angels to make notes in a giant ledger. " Armstrong, Beth; son. Patron saint...give her Gerard. He's used to profanity. " " Forrest, Marjorie; daughter. Patron saint, Cecelia. " " Rutledge, ; twins. Patron saint, . " Finally He passes a name to an angel and smiles, " Give her a handicapped child. " The angel is curious. " Why this one God? She's so happy. " " Exactly, " smiles God, " Could I give a handicapped child to a mother who does not know laughter? That would be cruel. " " But has she patience? " asks the angel. " I don't want her to have too much patience or she will drown in a sea of self-pity and despair. Once the shock and resentment wears off, she'll handle it. " " I watched her today. She has that feeling of self and independence that is so rare and so necessary in a mother. You see, the child I'm going to give her has her own world. She has to make her live in her world and that's not going to be easy. " " But, Lord, I don't think she even believes in you. " God smiles, " No matter, I can fix that. This one is perfect -she has just enough selfishness. " The angel gasps - " selfishness? is that a virtue? " God nods. " If she can't separate herself from the child occasionally, she'll never survive. Yes, here is a woman whom I will bless with a child less than perfect. She doesn't realize it yet, but she is to be envied. She will never take for granted a " spoken word " . She will consider a " step " ordinary. When her child says " Momma " for the first time, she will be present at a miracle, and will know it! " " I will permit her to see clearly the things I see...ignorance, cruelty, prejudice....and allow her to rise above them. She will never be alone. I will be at her side every minute of every day of her life, because she is doing My work as surely as if she is here by My side " . " And what about her Patron saint? " asks the angel, his pen poised in mid-air. God smiles, " A mirror will suffice. " Misty Gillispie mlgillispie1980@... Re: ( ) said his name Awesome for you and !!! that is great to hear. Guest guest Posted March 22, 2006 Report Posted March 22, 2006 Leighanne, Yeah !!!! I so totally now how proud you are. My Bobby will be 4 next month and I finally got him to answer the questions “whats your name” and “how old are you” in December. The 1st time someone asked him these and he could answer I was SOOO happy. I also don’t know if he really gets it especially the age, but that’s ok. Now I have to teach him so say 4 next month! Lol Tina said his name is 3 years old and I have never been able to get him to say his own name. Well he said it tonight while we were laying down to go to bed. Guest guest Posted March 22, 2006 Report Posted March 22, 2006 , That might work, I hadn't thought of anything like that. I have a picture of him set as wall paper on my computer and when i ask him who it is he'll say boy or 2 cause that's how old he used to be. He won't look at photos and tell me that's andrew. I can sometimes get him to say that's me, but most of the time he'll say you instead of me. Leighanne ston <jjtripletmom@...> wrote: How Wonferful Leighanne! In fact, this is part of the ABA program for the little guy I work with. They took " headshots " of all of us and his immediate family, including him and the family dog. Then we would sit and have him name everyone. Start with just a few, then add as he masters them. Another idea is to provide the correct answer for him to learn. So when you ask, " What is your name? " you then say, " says, 'My name is !' " And that is the prompt - eventually you fade it out. If practiced, he can learn it and eventually it will be generalized. Roxanna Quote
