Do you have sick time you can take? We have to use sick pay for doctors

visits. I told my boss I had to take this class and it was 4 half days

during the week and I was able to use sick pay to attend.

You may want to talk to your employer. Even if they don't let you use sick

pay and have to use personal leave or vacation pay, I think they don't have

a lot of options. If you are diabetic and your doctor says you need this I

think the ADA would say that this is a 'reasonable accomodation' that your

employer needs to make. I would suggest talking to your human resources

department.

Hi Rose! My goodness, we have similiar problems. I too have spinal stenosis and

dengenerative disc disease. I take the cortizone shots ever so often to help

relieve the pain. It works for a while. So far I have had two this year and

getting ready to have the third. It does bring some releif. Have you tried that

and did it help you? I am also taking Melformin. I am currently on 500 twice a

day. I am taking my levels periodically through the day. I go back to the dr on

April 3. He will decide then if I am on the correct med and level. I tell you

what, this scared me to death. I had no idea. He told me to exercise an hour a

day. I am finding that difficult to do.By the time you get off work, go the

store, cook dinner, etc. I have been making myself walk at lunchtime for 30

minutes. And let me tell you how sore my body is! LOL!! Good to meet you Rose. I

hope we can help each other through this difficult time.---

Wow!! How sad for you. I am glad the shots work for you. The doc giving me the

shots does not rx pain meds either. THey will only do that if they operate on

you he said. I get the pain meds from my family doc. I got off the pain peds for

several months. But now I am back on them. I am due for one of those shots in

the next week or so.Did you go through depression as these things were happening

to you?---

Well, you will go if you want to make the time. It almost sounds like you

are making excuses not to go.

It's all a matter of priorities. You have the sick pay, so it isn't going

to be money out of your pocket wage wise... your boss said to go, so it

isn't that you can't take the time off. Work always gets backed up if you

take time off...

It sounds like you have basically talked yourself out of going now. I

suggest you plan and prepare *NOW* for April (either the marathon class or

their next regular class).

You can plan to succeed or fail to plan.

Hi, Glad to know that I am not alone, but wouldn't wish this

combination of illnesses on my worst enemy. I have had some

injections in my spinal cord over the last 4 years, but not

cortizone. Sometimes got some relief, most of the time not for long.

These were surgical procedures, very expensive, and I didn't think

they were worth it, but in order to stay in my pain management group

had to do what the doctor ordered. I have 11 discs involved from C3

to tailbone, and have had one cervical disc replacement in 1999.

Fortunately, or not, I quit work in June 2003, and started getting

disability in Dec. 2003. So I longer have to juggle work, housework,

cooking, and illness. I do what I feel like, and don't do what I

don't. My hubby is a great help, does the heavier housework and alot

of cooking. I am trying very hard to get my bg reading in line with

ADA recommendations, but cannot do it and eat 9 servings of carbs or

more a day. I have about decided to do this my way, not theirs. I

have found that if I increase very low fat meats, and eat more raw

and cooked low carb vegs. I can get closer. I am on 2000 mg of

metformin daily, fasting bg still 110-120, and 140-160 after meals.

If I go by the book that came with my meter, that is good. If I go by

what the ADA dietician told me I am still too high. Seems the more I

study this problem, the more complicated it gets. However, much

better than the 380's in January when we discovered my diabetes.

Please offer any suggestions you can. Thanks for writing. Rose

Check with your insurance. If your particular policy won't allow for large

purchases (i.e., 3 months at a time), I don't know that there is any benefit

with Liberty, unless you don't live close to a pharmacy.

In most cities, large grocery stores have pharmacies as well as Walgreens on

every other corner.. with that type of convenience, I fail to see the

benefit of mail order. Most insurance companies have 'contracted' rates

with participating pharmacies, so there probably isn't much difference

between the local pharmacy price and Liberty's price (especially when you

get things down to the co-pay level).

Your largest savings on test strips is going to be based upon the BRAND you

purchase. Check out your local pharmacy and see if they have a 'store

brand' meter. If they do it is probably a True Track. This is what

Walgreens has for their branded meter. The strips are about half the price

of the other meters (in fact, the meter was only $17). By getting a meter

with the least expensive strips, you will reduce your out of pocket costs.

I joined this group to find

people to talk to about diabetes, because so many people don't want

to talk about it. All the people I talk to don't know what I am going

thouth or don't undestand. I just need to know people have the same

problems as me. Like for instance I take 6 shots a day and my blood

sugar 7 times a day. My a1c was 11.1 in jan and now it is 7.8. I am

so proud of my self.

Hi ,

Most people that don't have diabetes don't understand what is going on.

This is true with other illnesses/diseases as well. That is why support groups

at hospitals, church or internet can be so important.

Congratulations on bringing your A1c down. Keep up the good work.

hugs

Eunice

Welcome to the group April! You do have to be committed to the diet.

But the surgery gives you a little bit more control. You can't indulge

or you'll get sick!

I was tested today. We had a luncheon for work at the country club.

Fried chicken, ham in some sort of sweet glaze, carrots in what seemed

like some sort of glaze, green beans, bread, cheese cake, coconut cake,

squash casserole, salad, pasta salad, and mashed potatoes. I had 2

carrots (baby carrots), a couple bites of green beans, a few bites of

ham, a couple bites of the squash casserole, a few bites of chicken

(with the skin peeled off), and a couple bites of mashed potatoes. I

was happy w/ that. I was full. :-) I was worried about what I would

eat; but it turned out fine. I didn't over eat. In what time it took

me to eat what little I ate everyone else had woofed down the salad, the

meal & their dessert!!
