You have taken the first step in asking for information and support. This

is a great group of people who are willing to offer support and encouragement.

You need to talk with a nutritionist/diabetes educator. If your doctor did

not schedule this for you, call his office and ask him/her to set a schedule

for you.

It is okay to be overwhelmed, sad about being diagnosed, but it is not the

end of the world. It can be a new beginning to a long and healthy life. You

need to just take one step at a time.

A good source of information is the Joslin Diabetes Center beginners guide.

Here is the link.

Go through this as you have time. Don't get overwhelmed with all the

information. Also, they offer online classes. You may want to go through

those.

It can be done whenever you have extra time.

Hi, Kathy, my name is Rose. I was diagnosed with

type 2 in January and attended our hospital's classes a couple of

times, but find that common sense and testing is teaching me more. I

am controlling with Med. Metformin, and trying to eat right. Am just

not getting my blood glucose into the range the doctor wants. I find

that eating out is a nightmare. Restuarants serve too much meat and

too many potatoes, which I find leave me with a high reading. I am

also disabled with degenerative disc disease and spinal stenosis, so

exexercise is very limited. This probably contributed to the onset of

my diabetes in the first place, as I gained weight after retiring

three years ago. The dietition told me to eat three servings of carbs

at each meal and a snack between meals. I find that eating less

potatoes, rice, pasta, etc., and more raw or cooked dark green vegs.

helps me stay in control better. For snacks I am learning to eat

fruit, which I hardly ever did before, and sugar free pudding and ice

caream help with the sweet cravings. Maybe we can help each other get

thru these early months. Please feel free to write me. Rose

A lot of people find that educators recommend too many carbs. You

sound like you are ahead of the game. Good work.

Rose,

Are you sure your name is Rose and not Judith?? You just told the majority

of my story except that I have an eating disorder that is making the 3 meals

and nothing inbetween and drop all fun foods very interesting.

I have DDD and stenosis too. I'm mostly in a wheel chair now but have

started exercising anyway. I have just started this journey too. Right now

my numbers don't warrent meds and I want to keep it that way because of too

many other medical issues I face which I have to take meds for.

This is a great list!

Hi Kathy,

The Joslin Diabetes Center offers an online course on diabetes. You may

I also have stenosis. I had the injections but last July had surgery on my back.

We thought it was going good until I feel. Yhen the back pain came back. I had a

CY scan and it showed a gap in the fusion so I'm back in my back brace until I

have another scan in May. Yhen if it isn't healed I'll have to have abother

surgery and my dr. will add more bone. I think it will eventually work.

No problem asking me questions. If I don't want to answer them I won't

:-))))

Yes, landing in the w/c was because of degenerative disc disease and

stenosis and horrid lower back pain and weakness. then about 6 months ago I

developed awful pain in the soles of my feet and we assumed that it was

another of those mysterious fibromyalgia pain things. Now I am wondering if

it is because of the diabetes even though mine is so 'minor' for lack of a

better word to describe it.

I have a wonderful dr who is an anesthesiologist by 'profession' who only

deals with pain - mostly injections as far as I can tell. I get injections

into my L4-L5 area and sciatic areas as far as I can fathom. This dr has

saved my life, no fooling. The pain 2 1/2 yrs ago was so bad death looked

good to me. He stopped it. He will also do bursitis shots for me and they

are terrific too. But he won't rx any pain meds for me. Don't know why

exactly no matter how he explains it, but he won't. He has explained to me

that many patients benefit from shots for years and others don't. So far

they are really helping me and I plan to continue. What other choice is

there?!

then again, in DE I can't find any pain drs at all and PCP won't rx pain

meds either. In DE you just better not have pain or be willing (desperate?)

to drive into Philly or Baltimore I guess.

the fibro started the pain and weakness and the DDD finished me off. 3

years ago I was still breaking and training horses! such is life.
