Have members on this board had any success with certain tampons more

than others?

I know the external part of my vulva has had trouble dealing with

always pads, so I've stopped using those completely.

I've been using tampax pearl because those seem to insert in the most

easily but the other day i noticed a flare up after i removed a tampon

and i think it may have been caused by it. I managed to calm it down

with hydrocortisone cream and alleve but now i'm wondering if i

possibly had an allergic reaction to it?

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

I haven't used tampons in years because of heavy flow but now that I

have this vulvar stuff any paper type product seems to cause burning

and itching. Toilet paper and all pads or liners I've tried so far are

killing me. I'm afraid to use tampons.

I've never been able to tolerate tampons and so I don't even bother trying now. I can use NatraCare or Seventh Generation pads and I can also use Kotex brand okay. I used to use Always brand, but there has been published info stating that - that particular brand can cause irritation! Which is the last thing we need! I've come across both NatraCare and Seventh Generation at a Health Food Store, and you can also purchase them on drugstore.com. Periods can be so rough on vulvar pain sufferers because blood has a higher ph level and can irritate our delicate skin, especially when it is already in pain. Hi there,I'm not sure, but I would think using an over the counter type of steroid might cause a flare up due to the inert ingredients in it. Seems like those of us with vulvar pain have to be so careful about what we use. What kind of symptoms do you now have from using the cream?Keep in mind that an antihistamine is good for allergic type reactions. But if you are having any major type of symptoms, I'd go get checked out! As for Always brand pads, do stay away from them. I actually used them for a long time before I realized they were adding to my vulvar pain and discomfort with my periods. They are known to cause irritation - whether you have vulvar pain or not! I hope you feel better soon! ChelleHave members on this board had any success with certain tampons more than others? Hi:

Always pads are horrible to use. There was an article about them several years ago, don't know if it was on this group or another one. But don't use them.

I like Playtex unscented tampons. Tampex irritate me. I think because they are longer, but who knows.

I was using natracare applicator tampons before I had the baby...if

needed, I would lube them up with a little emu oil. But I liked them

because they weren't chlorine bleached so I didn't worry about that

chemical irritation. I would only have trouble with them if I tried to

remove it when it was too dry/hadn't absorbed enough yet, but even

then it was loads better than bulky, irritating pads. Using the giant

pads after Caleb came in September was the worst!

Hi Chelle,

I actually used the hydrocortisone cream to quell the flare up and it

seemed to work ok for the most part. I'm nervous about using the

cream, but my gyno told me i could use it on a regular basis if i

needed to because i deal with a lot of external itching. I'm a little

skeptical of this, but it usually does calm down any inflammation i

have during a flare up.

The main suggestions that i have had for itching really have just been

to use the cream and take an anti histamine at night to break the

cycle. But every time i stop it comes back!

The tampon use seemed to elevate the issue a few days ago for some

reason. Usually my flare ups just involve intense itching, but this

involved itching and more pain than usual.

Anyways thanks for your response!

For anyone who uses the natracare organic tampons...

I was using the slender tampons from Tampax with a little bit of water

on the applicator instead of any type of lube, no burning with

water :) Tampax stopped making them. I was wondering if the natracare

organic ones are very slender also or are they now comparable to all of

the other tampons out there which are shorter and thicker then the old

Tampax brand?

Thanks

ML,

I take doxepin. I have not taken it in a long while though i have been

very horrible about maintaining my pain and itching because i became

rather depressed about it.

I have really found some great options for menstrual care:

The Diva Cup, www.divacup.com, is an internal cup you insert that

doesn't contain the irritating chemicals of a tampon, plus is re-

usable, so environmentaly friendly. When I started using one I was

amazed how comfortable it was and no leaks (always a problem for me

before)!

Regarding pads, I have been severely allergic to most brands of pads

(the chemicals that make them so absorbent are pretty harsh!) so when

I was pregnant I was very concerned about how I would handle post-

partum bleeding. My midwife reccomended cloth menstrual pads and I

love them! I got the organic cottons ones, but they come in many

cute patterns. You soak them in a bucket of water and they wash so

clean, again no chemicals. And amazing again how " going green " can

save you a lot of green $$$. Brands are www.gladrags.com or I got

mine from http://www.manymoonsalternatives.com/

Regarding toilet paper, this has been such an issue for me for many,

many years. So bad in fact while I was pregnant my allergist

reccomended I use cloth toilet paper! (This was before my diagnosis

for VVS) I cut up men's handkerchiefs, washed them in Dreft, and

tossed them in a little covered trash can after use. It was a bit

absurd, but it was the only thing that didn't make me crazy burning

itchy! But after I came to this site I did a search for old posts

about TP, and found one reccomended called " Purely Cotton " that has

truely changed my life. amazing how not having to pack your own

cloth toilet paper boosts your spirits, although I do pack my own

Purely Cotton TP. I actually bought a case of the tissue packs which

fit perfect in my purse. www.purelycotton.com

I find the natracare to be slender enough and I'm fussy about tampons.

I do have to lube it though, with lube and not water, because they are

the kind of tampon where the actual tampon sticks out the top a bit

(ie they don't have a rounded applicator tip but are more flat on top)

and that always irritates me.
