Guest guest
A good resource for parents regarding the law/IEP's/etc is www.wrightslaw.com. When you move to a new area/state it is my understanding that the new school system uses the old IEP initially but within 4 to 6 weeks re-evaluates your child and holds a new IEP meeting. At that time they create an entirely new IEP. They are not legally bound to make an identical IEP. They will make an IEP based on their assessment findings. It is your job as the parent to advocate for the services your child needs, have your documentation from any independent evaluators, etc. There is something in the law about how long they have to put your child through this re-eval/new IEP process but I don't know if that is affected by school being out over the summer. Check 's law. Guest guest
I know there are no guarantees but I recently met a woman who has a son about 6 months older than mine (mine is 3) who has an ASD diagnosis (like what I'm anticipating we will get for my son). She moved to NV from PA. She's getting considerably less services here than she was getting in PA. She also said in PA she got a medicaid-type card and much more financial help with services than what she has here. She basically said if she would have known, she'd never have left PA. So hopefully you will be pleasantly surprised. It is hard to say what is available in PA compared to NY but it is apparently a lot more than what is offered in NV. :-)Tera " It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it " . ----- Original Message ---- WOn Sep 5, 2006, at 10:03 AM, pmcclaff69 wrote: > i have just moved to PA from NY and my son has an IEP. does anybody > know what is the law regarding moving to a new state, are services > suppose to transfer over straight away in school until we have a new > meeting. any information would be great. > my son received speech, OT, PT and reading help in NY > PA school district has had his IEP since june of this year. > thanks > >
Guest guest
Hi, I'm not sure about the IEP/school thing, but since you're moving to PA I want to make sure you know that you can get your son Medicaid (regardless of your income or assets) to pay for private therapies. We're done using it now (my daughter doesn't even qualify for any therapy services anymore), but while she was on it for about 9 months we didn't have to pay a cent for her 4 private therapy (2 ST 2 OT) sessions per week. It picks up all that your insurance company won't pay for, including regular medical services, and you can even get reimbursed for transportation, diapers, etc. The only qualification is that your child is disabled. Apraxia diagnosis qualified my daughter, but I believe any significant delays in any area can qualify. Guest guest
My best friend lives in PA and her son is autistic. There is a medicaid-type card there. I think it is called the Access Program (or something like that). I know she had to apply for Social Security and get the denial letter in order for her to move forward with the Access card. Basically, whatever her insurance doesn't pay for, the Access card does (including co-pays). It is basically a secondary insurance and it has saved them! Her son sees a bunch of therapists and docs, and it is all paid for. Apparently this isn't really advertised, so make sure you ask about it. Also, she is pretty happy with her services in PA. She, however, does have to " fight " somtimes to get what she needs. I think you have this in every state though at one point or another. Good luck, and let me know if you want me to have my friend get intouch with you. I know she would be more than happy to help. By the way...what part of PA are you moving to?
