Guest guest Posted March 25, 2006 Report Posted March 25, 2006 I have a son who is 4 years old, approximately 35 lbs., and recently purchased ProEFA. Does anyone know the proper dosage for a child his age/weight? He has been informally diagnosed with apraxia by his speech pathologist. Quote
Guest guest Posted March 26, 2006 Report Posted March 26, 2006 Hi, My daughter will be 4 years old in May and weighs 30 lbs. I've been giving her 1/4 tsp daily of ProEFA. I called the manufacturer and that is what they recommended. She has been diagnosed with dyspraxia. Guest guest Posted March 26, 2006 Report Posted March 26, 2006 1/4 teaspoon may not be sufficient to see benefits or maximum benefits of omega 3 supplements. We started out with 1/2 teaspoon, and have gone up substantially since then, witnessing surges in coordination and speech with each increase. - [ ] ProEFA Dosage I have a son who is 4 years old, approximately 35 lbs., and recently purchased ProEFA. Guest guest Posted March 26, 2006 Report Posted March 26, 2006 Interesting you would say that. I am thinking of upping my 2.1 year- old's dose to two capsules a day. He got sick last week and the doctor put him on a starvation diet of rice porridge only for a whole week. Poor thing. Well, we had to stop the Pro-efa capsules. I looked for signs of regression and actually saw some evidence of progress despite him feeling weak and sickly. I resumed Pro-efa about five days ago, and he is doing well, though I don't really think I can attribute it to the capsules. We eat oily fish daily here in Japan, so it is difficult to say how significant supplementing with the borage oil in such small quantities is. Still, he likes taking the capsules (even asks for them if I forget) and they aren't expensive, so I will be doubling the dose once we get a new shipment. Incidentally, we have eliminated all hydrogenated fats from his diet as well, and I cook all of his meals from scratch. He can now say a few more sounds. He says " Na " , " Ha " " Ma " and " A " , and he makes good approximations of " W " and " F " , though he can't pair them with a vowel. He is attempting many other sounds and words as well, but mostly they are mouth movements with no sounds, though I can understand what he is saying. I call it " lip gesturing " . He can say " Mama " when prompted, but all other words he may or may not be able to say on command. He is cognitively and receptively advanced, so I am optimistic that he will respond well to speech therapy when the time comes. In the mean time, I am his therapist, playing games with words and speech and encouraging him to play along. > 1/4 teaspoon may not be sufficient to see benefits or maximum benefits of > omega 3 supplements. Guest guest Posted March 26, 2006 Report Posted March 26, 2006 I'd start with two capsules in the morning, but if you want to be extra cautious start with one and then add the second the next week. We had better results giving them both in the morning. Peace, Kathy E. Guest guest Posted July 15, 2007 Report Posted July 15, 2007 We've had a surge every time we've increased the dosage. We have now maxed out in my opinion: 2 EFA and 1 EPA three times per day. That's a lot, but it works for us. We also take vitamin K to prevent clotting issues. in NJ > > Hi, > > I am trying to decide what dosage of ProEfa to give my 4 year old > 40lbs. Guest guest Posted July 16, 2007 Report Posted July 16, 2007 For what it's worth...... I switched my 8 yo son to a higher EPA dosage and saw a major regression. I did some more research and found that most kids with neurological problems do far better with a high DHA dosage, especially if you are dealing with global dyspraxia. So I put him on a high DHA dosage and he is doing much better. I have also seen better communication skills in my 3 yo on DHA rather than EPA. Just FYI - no specific dosage recommendations for a 4 yo. Guest guest Posted July 16, 2007 Report Posted July 16, 2007 Hey Kim I was curious to know where you found your info on DHA. Everything I have read talks about DHA being more important for brain development in pregnancy and early years and EPA being more important for the minute to minute brain function. I think it is wonderful that you found something that is working for your son!! Tina > > > > Hi, > > > > I am trying to decide what dosage of ProEfa to give my 4 year old > > 40lbs. Guest guest Posted July 17, 2007 Report Posted July 17, 2007 Aggie, I'm a little loathe to start recommending brands and dosages. Really none of this is very scientific and there haven't been enough studies done to show what exact dosages anybody should be, using let alone what brand - this is all trial and error. There are a lot of brands out there that have high concentrations of DHA to EPA, and just straight cod liver oil itself has high DHA to EPA. There is Nordic Naturals Children's DHA (which has the advantage of coming in really small ball-shaped pills for little guys) and Carlson for Kids Chewable DHA (which I think are really gross to chew - bleh!). For older kids who can swallow pills, there are adult versions of these as well. My kids really like Gummy Omegalicious by Rainbow Light. These are basically like gummy fruit snacks. They have about a 5:1 ratio of DHA to EPA. The dosages are small, but there is absolutely no fight to get them down . The only thing about them is they are made in Colombia....hmmmm..... But the owner and distributor is American so I just hope they have tight standards controls! Anyway, just look around and see what you can find. I'm not sure that I've noticed much of a difference between brands as long as I keep the ratio at least 1:1 (though I shoot for 2:1) of DHA to EPA. Hope that helps! Guest guest Posted July 17, 2007 Report Posted July 17, 2007 Tina, There is actually quite a bit of information out there on this. Even if you just follow the links on this group's website on Omega-3s, many of the articles talk about the importance of DHA vs EPA. There are very few scientific studies on the subject, but most of the ones that have been done in neurologically challenged kids (not specifically apraxia) show they are deficient in DHA, not EPA, and that increasing their DHA intake helps significantly. Even some of the articles that address apraxia specifically speculate the higher EPA information may be incorrect because DHA sometimes takes longer to see the effects. Some people don't see immediate results with the DHA, switch to EPA, and then start seeing results, possibly because the DHA is finally kicking in. I also know many experts who work with neurologically challenged kids (Dianne Craft who runs Child Diagnostics Inc and wrote the Brain Integration Therapy Manual comes immediately to mind) recommend a higher DHA to EPA ratio. In fact, the only place I have really seen the higher EPA to DHA ratio touted is on this board. Like I said, I gave it a try and saw a severe and immediate regression in my son who had previously made incredible progress. I went back to the higher DHA levels and he is starting to come around again. Just what I have read and what I've seen. Guest guest Posted July 17, 2007 Report Posted July 17, 2007 Hi Kim: I find the fish oil subject very interesting...and for higher amounts of DHA working for your son intrigues me. Is he on real high doses of DHA without any EPA? My son responds better to just omega 3 vs. omega 3 and omega 6. I commend you for going outside the box to find something that works for your son. Like you mentioned in another post it is trial and error. The reason I ask about the higher doses of DHA is because DHA can be converted to EPA...which has been said to help with the day to day function of the brain , and I have read EPA is quickly used up vs. DHA staying in the body longer. So most articles that I have read has said EPA and DHA are important to supplement together for their different functions. Are you also supplementing vitamin E since it is not in Cod Liver Oil? Below is a good article of the same information that I keep reading in other articles. http://ezinearticles.com/?EPA-Fish-Oil---Why-All-the-Fuss? & id=310653 Anyway...congrats to you for finding something that works for your son. Guest guest Posted July 17, 2007 Report Posted July 17, 2007 Tina, We do DHA, EPA, ALA, GLA, Omega 6 and Omega 9. All types of fat (except trans-fat, of course) are essential and important for maintaining a healthy body, and especially a healthy nervous system. Neurological communication would be impossible without fat. I think it is very telling that the corpus callosum (which connects the 2 hemispheres in the brain) is 80% fat! Hmmm.....do you think kids who have trouble with coordination and crossing the midline might have a fat issue? To me the answer is obvious. I truly feel poor myelination is a key to our kids' problems. My only point to posting the DHA information was this. It seems like most people on this board seem to have jumped onto the high EPA bandwagon big time. This does not mesh with my research, but I decided to give it a fair shake to see if it would improve my son's speech. Instead we saw a major regression. When we went back to higher levels of DHA (I try to maintain between a 1:1 and 2:1 ratio of DHA to EPA) he got back up to speed. I can't " prove " this was all due to fish oils. In fact, it's a little frightening to me to think changing one supplement could have such a big impact. But as far as I can tell, the only thing that changed between the regression and the rebound was the fish oils. I guess I would just like to encourage parents to do what is best for their child. Do your research and do it well, but in the end, use what works to help your child get well. Guest guest Posted July 17, 2007 Report Posted July 17, 2007 Hi Kim: I totally agree...whatever works keep with it!! I actually found out about my son doing better on the higher Omega 3 by accident. I am glad I made that mistake because he is doing a lot better in all areas.
