Guest guest
Does anyone on the know anything about this group? American Health Information Management Association or AHIMA. While looking at some local ads for MTs I ran across one hospital whose help wanted ad for medical transcriptionists says that membership in AHIMA is required. Is anyone familiar with this group? I checked out their website, but was hoping someone with personal experience with them could tell me me. I've never seen a requirement like this for any other MT classified ad. Their membership fees are fairly steep, too. TIA, Dawn C. §(ºoº)§ M-TEC Student IC, Ortho - 2 years, IM AIM: fasthands47
Guest guest
Hi Dawn, Ahima is more for accredited medical record technicians and the like..I use to be one...they call them something else now...I think its registered health something or other....it is expensive or I would still be a member...but the information they have available is awsome... Guest guest
It's probably the biggest organization out there for health information professionals. It's kind of like an AAMT for ALL health information folks (coders, MTs, medical records personnel, etc., etc.). I dropped my AAMT membership, but I just might join AHIMA. " Next year, maybe, " Rennie says to herself. LOL! PS. Membership is cheaper than AAMT, I believe. Rennie www.renesue.com OT: AHIMA ? Does anyone on the know anything about this group? Guest guest
Thanks, Nel. I did visit the site and it looked like they had a tremendous amount if HIPAA info, but I didn't see anything else that was really MT related. I wondered if it was a new trend and why I've never seen this requirement before for MTs. Dawn C Subject: Re: OT: AHIMA ? Guest guest
Dawn, no, it isn't geared specifically toward MTs. You're right about that. I think MTs are probably just a small % of their membership. Rennie www.renesue.com Re: OT: AHIMA ? It's probably the biggest organization out there for health information professionals. Guest guest
Rennie, I dropped my AAMT membership this year, too, but we won't go there just now. : ) Can I ask what benefit would you hope to gain from joining AHIMA? Do you think this group might have better success than AAMT as far as representing HIM professionals (MTs specifically) and protecting and supporting our profession's best interests? Dawn C. Guest guest
I'm no expert, but I think that might be the case. They get pretty good press in general. I have a query into them right now about their medical insurance. The site mentions it as a member benefit but gives no details. That would be very important to me. Additionally, I feel driven to be a member of a professional organization, and AAMT just isn't my cup of tea. Actually, I hate tea. *g* Rennie www.renesue.com Re: OT: AHIMA ? I am not a member of AAMT, but several of the companies that I have looked into make it seem like you must join AAMT to be taken seriously. I know their membership is quite pricey Our teacher even said we should join. I was mainly going to join them for their mentor program, but for now, I think this group here has a wonderful group of mentors. If anyone would like to personally email me their pros or cons on AAMT without posting their thoughts here, please send me an email to: benuschesgang@... I would be interested in getting some honest feedback before I do shell out any money. Recent grad. > >
