Guest guest
Hi all. I was wondering if anyone here has ColaBoma? My 27 year old husband Ishamael has it in the right eye, and the left doesn't have it, but he still needs glasses for the left eye, and it has tunnel vision. The eye doctors in Israel where he was at the time claimed it was because he was forced to use it too hard in school without the right eye to help, and I'm not sure if I like that explanation. *sighs* Anyway, just was interested in chatting with others with ColaBoma as we've only met one. She had migraines a lot on the side where the ColaBoma was, but her other eye was okay. Sem
Guest guest
Hello Sem, Many of us have children who have colobomas. My daughter has mild chorioretinal colobomas that do not affect her vision alot. She does have difficulty processing certain visual information, though. The reason for the processing difficulty is not fully understand yet, but can be described as related to a cortical vision impairment. As for your husband's left eye, I do not know the answer. One of the parents on the list is an optometrist and will undoubtedly give some important information related to your question. I, myself, have reading vision in only one eye. However, no futher damage has occured to my 'good' eye because I have used it so much. The reason for my vision issue is different than your husband's, so this information may not be helpful at all. I hope you receive helpful answers. :-) ColaBoma? Hi all. I was wondering if anyone here has ColaBoma? Guest guest
Sem, my daughter has colobomas in both eyes on the optic nerves. I don't think she has migraines (that she has indicated to us, anyway). She functions very well visually despite the colobomas. www.chargesyndrome.info > > Hi all. Guest guest
Thanks very much! The eye doctors here didn't know much about ColaBoma, but knew or thought he didn't have it in his left eye. Still they aught to know what causes the tunnel vision. *sighs* It is frustrating for both of us with him having conditions that no one knows much about. The ColaBoma made him almost blind in his right eye. Sem
Guest guest
Sem- Aubrie has a huge coloboma in her left eye that affects every part of her eye, from the nerve to the iris. She has minimal vision in that eye. When she turns her head just right, she can see a very small field of vision with very poor acuity. A coloboma is like a cleft of the eye ball. The 2 halves of the eye didn't come together as they should. So where there is a coloboma, there is an absence of tissue. I think in most cases, a coloboma causes a loss in visual field. I wonder if the nature of your husband's coloboma causes a loss of all of his peripheral vision which leaves him with tunnel vision. It's all so complex and hard to understand! What I do know is that there is no remedy for the visual loss due to coloboma. Nothing can replace the absent tissue and glasses can't fix the loss of vision. My daughter wears glasses for near-sightedness in her other eye and to protect her 'good' eye from injury. Guest guest
Sem, yahoogroups also has a listserv for families dealing only with coloboma - if that is the main thing your husband has to deal with, you might find it more helpful - either instead of or in addtion to this one. Guest guest
Sem, this person you know who has migraines on the side with the coloboma--do you know what those felt like for her? My daughter has colobomas in both eyes, with the one in her left eye being the worst. She has very little vision in that eye, and it is also much smaller than her right eye. We've been noticing for the past few months that she sometimes has days when she appears to be in a lot of pain on the left side. She will cry out and grab her left eye off and on over a course of several hours. She also has seizures, so we aren't sure whether these pain episodes are related to her seizures or her colobomas. is nonverbal, so she really can't explain to us what she's feeling, and her neurologist and ophthalmologist haven't had any insight so far. Just curious. , mom to (4) http://kauffmanlak.blogspot.com/ --------------------------------- Sponsored Link Mortgage rates near 39yr lows. $420,000 Mortgage for $1,399/mo - Calculate new house payment
Guest guest
Michele: Thanks for your info. Not sure if the ColaBoma causes the tunnel vision, as it, the tunnel vision, is actually in the other eye. The eye with the ColaBoma actually is almost totally blind. The other eye has the tunnel vision. Do you mean it could affect both eyes in some odd way? Sem

Guest guest
Sem- No - the coloboma would only effect the eye that has it. I'm sorry. I misinterpreted what you said. Probably was reading when I was overtired and hurried! Michele W _____ From: CHARGE [mailto:CHARGE ] On Behalf Of semirhage Sent: Friday, November 17, 2006 1:30 PM To: CHARGE Subject: Re: ColaBoma? Guest guest
Hi Sem, I think your husband's Drs. did not do a very good job of making sure your husband understood what they were trying to say. If I am understanding you correctly, even though the right eye has the coloboma, it is still the " better " of the two eyes? And if I remember correctly from your previous emails, he is legally blind and doesn't have good vision out of either eye. In cases like these, correcting a significant near or far-sightedness along with following a patching regimine for the " good " eye can help reduce further decreases in vision from " lazy eye " (amblyopia), although it will never improve the vision in that eye beyond the level determined by the pre-existing eye disease. Amblyopia causes a uniform decrease in vision thoughout the entire field of vision--I have never heard of it decreasing only the peripheral vision and causing " tunnel vision. " There must be something else causing the tunnel vision on the left side. Has glaucoma been ruled out? Has he had a formal test (called a threshold visual field) of his side vision done? This could help determine " where " the loss of side vision is coming from (is it something going on in the eye itself, or further back along the visual processing pathway in the brain).
