G-tubes and fundoplications

My son is almost certainly going to get a G-tube in the not-to-distant

future and I was wondering how many people have fundoplications with

their G-tubes. can you please vote in the poll so I can get an idea

Our daughter Kennedy had a gtube and fundo done at 6 months of age. The

fundo is still intact (she is nine years old) and she now has the g-button

which is really nice. I've said it many times on the list, that I believe

that surgery was the biggest quality-of-life changing (for the better)

surgery she's had out of all 18 of them. Now, she does it herself (you can

see doing it here: http://www.chargesyndrome.info/videos.html - it's the

video near the bottom). We were so happy to get rid of the OG tube we had

been feeding her through for six months. Good luck and keep us posted!!!

In your poll, I voted that our child has a g-tube and fundo. However, the

actual answer is that she HAD a g-tube and fundo as the G-tube was removed years

ago.

Would you like me to keep the answer as I put it, or would you prefer that I

change it to " None of the above " . Which answer would be most helpful to your

understanding of the numbers?

In our case, our daughter had a g-tube placed at 7 weeks of age. There were

many escalating breathing and swallowing problems that followed. When she was

almost 6 months old she had a fundoplication to decrease the aspiration

occurances.

I will absolutely participate in the poll ) Footnote: did not have a

fundoplication, and with the years of horrible reflux I think would have

benefited from one (if he also would have been lucky enough to have one that

worked....), but because he had esophageal atresia with double H

tracheo-esophageal fistulas, they opted not to do the fundoplication because

they wanted to preserve as much flexibility (length) in his esophagus as

possible for the repair.....

I'm a little opinionated about this topic - sorry. did not have

aspiration issues do a fundo was not needed - however - many surgeons advise

that you must do both. That is not true. 's g-tube works fine and has not

created reflux.

In a non- or little eating child the G-tube is a blessing - while it may

complicate life a little - it simplifies a lot and alleviates the food stress!

Aubrie had a Gtube with no fundo. She now eats orally and has no reflux.

Gtube was removed at about 18 mos of age.

got a feeding tube (tp tube) at 1 1/2 months. She got a gtube and

fundo done at 5 months. Her fundo. came undone at some point a while ago and we

had it fixed this past Sept. b/c her vomiting (with what would become cyclic

vomiting syndrome) was so bad. The vomiting is so much better however she does

gag and wretch pretty hard when she has her " episodes " . So they are watching her

to make sure that it doesn't come undone again. My major advice to you

is.....MAKE SURE THEY DO A TEST TO MAKE SURE THERE WAS NO DAMAGE TO THE

ESOPHAGUS DURING THE PROCEDURE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I say this with much emphasis

only b/c they did not do this study on this past time b/c she was an

aspirator and b/c they had never had problems before with damaging the

esophagus. Having said that, would be their first. They punctured her

esophagus and we didn't know until a week later when she became septic from the

infection/leakage and ended up in the PICU on a vent for 6 weeks. Anyways, I am

not trying to freak you out b/c really some good things have come out of it so

it was worth it. My point is that there is a way that they can test for

punctures that don't involve her being at risk for aspiration and that could

have helped us to know in advance. So I still recommend the feeding tube and the

fundo if you are having major vomitting problems. Because of it we are finally

able to get to gain weight, save her teeth and prevent damage to her

esophagus,etc. from all the vomitting. Hope this helps and again I don't mean to

freak you out.

My daughter had the g-tube and the fundo done at two weeks, it's only

been two weeks since the surgery, but we already have seen a major

improvement in her feedings, as well as the reflux problem.

Jack had a fundoplication and g-tube when he was almost 3 months old. I LOVE

IT! I joke with my husband that our next child is going to come out and I'm

going to ask them to " tube " it! The tube has been the best thing for him.

Before his tube he gained 1 pound in 3 months. He's been home for 3 months and

today he weighed 11 pounds! He has gained 5 pounds since he got the tube! I

also love giving his meds through it! Jack had his own pharmacy and I am

thrilled that I don't have to fight him to swallow everything. I just can't

wait until we can get him off the pump so i'm not on a 3 foot tether!

Unfortunately our attempts at bolus are not going well but I know we will get

there eventually!
