It really depends on why you are hypo.. the thyroid uses iodine to

produce thyroid hormone.. thi sstimualtes the thyroid which is not a

good thing if you have an autoimmune disorder such as Grave's or

Hashimoto's as this stimulation increases antibodies.

In certain parts of the world iodine defficency is a major factor in

hypothroidism /goiter etc.. and if this was the case then yeah, you

would want to add iodine. Most developed countries have the opposite

problem though.. the RDA for Iodine is 150mg, the average diet in North

America contains 500-700 mg..add in fast food and it can reach 2000mg.

Japan has an average intake of 2000mg daily because of the seafood diet.

You can have your doc do an iodine level test..this can be done by a

blood test or more commonly by collecting urine over a 24 hour period

and having it tested.

You do not want to completely avoid all iodine as it can cause

complications of hypo but when you have an autoimmune disorder you want

to stay as close if not just under the daily max so that you do not

stimulate antibodies.

General consensus among MANY professionals (but not all) who study Hashimoto's autoimmune disease, is that iodine is devastating to those who have it. Ordinarily, it would be good for us, but, because of our sensitivity in our "mistaken" immune systems, with the strange quirks it has, it COULD be that our iodine is mistaken for a foreign invader, just like the finished product, namely the thyroid hormones. There has been so much written about evidence of this going on in other parts of the body (with the antibodies), not only within and at the site of the thyroid itself. According to all descriptions I've read, this is actually the cause of the destruction at the site of the thyroid itself, i.e., the immune system has made a grave error in determining what is to be attacked and mistakenly attacks the thyroid itself, once the production of the thyroid hormones resumes in the sick gland. This is generally what causes the up-down-up-down hypo to hyper gland in the beginning, until it is so damaged that it can't produce anything any more. The speed with which this destruction happens is slower or faster, from person to person. These antibodies actually are attacking the raw substances used to create the thyroid hormones (thyroglobulin and thyroidperoxidase), as the production of them goes up. Grave error. This is why the consensus about taking extra iodine, as some believe that these antibodies recognize it as the "invader". There is iodine in natural foods and in some soils, so I don't understand how doctors or researchers can say that we are not getting enough iodine in The States. Other countries are another whole matter.

I have hypo and hashis with goiter.

I do eat fish and use iodized sea salt in little bitty bits.

my antibodies were >1000

any thoughts?

Sue:

If you remember, it was a bit controversial.

There were a couple of schools of thoughts..and one of

them pertained to whether you have hashie's. If you

have high anti-bodies it is thought that iodine might

make them perpetuate.

On the other hand..others say, if you have a

suppressed TSH and no antibody activity to speak of,

then you can take it in limited amounts regardless of

Hashie's DX.

I am somebody who has iodine in my multi and I eat sea

salt. I also have a suppressed TSH...and have gotten

my antibodies down.

Day after day, day after day,

We stuck, nor breath nor motion;

As idle as a painted ship

Upon a painted ocean.

Water, water, everywhere,

And all the boards did shrink;

Water, water, everywhere,

Nor any drop to drink.

Sue: Have you been tracking those antibodies? Are they going up or down? Is your TSH totally supressed? IT would be very hard to totally eliminate iodine as it is in many things....so I wouldn't get too wound up over this...:) The danger really gets to be for those folks *I think* for those who unwittingly goes to an Alternative doc who then shovels iodine supplements on a the untreated Hashi patient. That would just be asking for trouble according to the studies I've seen. Still, for anyone who is taking things with iodine or bladderwrack, kelp, blue-green algea (which are loaded with iodine),....one should still understand that this could and probably will effect thyroid hormone levels...regardless of whether one is on replacement. Some of the bottles will tell you

NOT to take them if you have been diagnosed with hyper-thyroidism for instance. ~E:) JustYourTypeDTP wrote: E I have hypo and hashis with goiter.I do eat fish and use iodized sea salt in little bitty bits.my antibodies were >1000 any thoughts?sueOn 3/14/07 12:39 PM,

Sue: Yup..yup...I know you like to pick up all the tid-bits. You have a good curious mind there!:) Many people will see their anti-bodies decrease over time when they have a suppressed TSH. Mine for instance were 70 nearly three years ago..and the last check a year ago they were like 28. I suppose...even if they do go "poof," I will always be considered to have an auto-immune disease (Hashis) and hypothyroidism...EVEN when I become "normalized" healthwise....so in this regard your doc is semantically correct. ~E:)JustYourTypeDTP wrote: Hi E,My endo told me once you have the hashi antibody you always have it, but I did insist on retesting after a year and it came the same: >1000 this past year.I am not fretting about the iodine at all, silly E, I am just a curious cat, as ever, always lookin’ for good stuff to put in me and what bad stuff to keep out :)sueOn 3/15/07 3:42 PM, "Gillespie" <lyongillespie (AT) yahoo (DOT) com> wrote: Sue: Have you been tracking those antibodies? Hi E,

My endo told me once you have the hashi antibody you always have it, but I did insist on retesting after a year and it came the same: >1000 this past year.

I am not fretting about the iodine at all, silly E, I am just a curious cat, as ever, always lookin’ for good stuff to put in me and what bad stuff to keep out :)
