Guest guest
Pamela, Your school district should have set up an IEP meeting before your son was sceduled to start. An IEP is an Individualized Education Plan. It includes information about your son's needs and how they will be met, such as what therapies her will recieve and how often, what special equipment he will need , etc. A child who needs any special services in school needs to have a plan in place for the teachers to follow so they understand your son and how they are to help him reach his goals, which are also spelled out in the IEP. They can't force you to send him to school, so if there are issues that need to be addressed, make sure they are taken care of so he will have a positive experience when he does start. He has speech therapy twice a week(he can say 20 words). He also recieves Occupational therapy for motor skill delay. So in April 2004 I enrolled him in my school districts " special services " . Two weeks ago he started having anxiety issues. So I took him to the dr and see referred him to a ped nerologist. To run some tests on him. So..here is the part where I need help... The school called yesterday(school started last week) and said that my son was suppose to be in class. They have him in a regular pre k calss with speech services. WHen I talked to my sons speech therapist about pre k she said that he will NOT be able to do pre k. He will act out because he will get frustrated. I tried to explain this to the specail services lady but she still said pre k. His speech therapist also said that he would definetly need a computer to communicate if he was put in a pre k class. We do not have one. Also what is a IEP? The school asked if we had one? PLEASE any advice on this would be WONDERFUL! PS- I also have him on the waiting list for headstart. I dont know if this would be more of a help to him HELP! Pamela MOM to Dylan
Guest guest
hi Pamula, my son is the same way. he does get oppositional in learning setting because of his hugh communication problem. reg preschool for him would be not good for him, he will be going to a regular daycare/school for 4 hrs but with a special educator shadowing him. I would def speak to your district if they want to keep your son in reg pre-k which I feel could be a good situation only if he had the proper support(spec educator with him, aide, teachers assistant) if not put him spec ed pre-k, which my son attends 1/2 days 5 days a week. an IEP is indivualized education plan. it basically tells all who work with your son what steps to help him. ie; will learn to communicate with peers 1)will say hi-dec2004(the date is when this goal should be mastered) I'm sure if you go on line there is better web site for the IEP. Please educate yourself on this it will help you get the proper help for your son, ask your SLP. I hope this helped keep us posted chris ReaganM03@... wrote: Here is a little of my sons history.. Guest guest
Pamela, The school system should supply him with a communication device. If it is written into the IEP.............under assisted tech they HAVE to provide one for him. You could also apply thru your insurance company some insurance co. pay for them. If no help there try Easter Seals. What state are you from? M-C
Guest guest
Pamela, I am trying to follow this Was he previously in a district special ed class or you did your own pre-school and just took him there for speech? The school district should be providing him with FAPE free and appropriate education in whatever setting that can work for him. Some districts have self contained classes with a low teacher student ratio with only kids that have issues. Some districts are better then others in terms of the mix of kids. You would want to observe the class to see if it would be a good match for him. Another type of class is an integrated class which has a mix of typically developing kids and delayed kids. Both of these classes are generally taught by a special ed teacher and has extra aides or paras in the class to help. Or there is a mainstream class where it is typical but a child may be pulled out for services. Basically this is what needs to happen. You need to talk to someone in Special services (writing a letter is better) and request to have an IEP developed for your son. They have a certain numbers of days to respond to you. If they have never done a formal eval they may request to do one. Next get all your private evals in order, the neuro, private SLP if you have one and any PT or OT reports you have. If the neuroligist is recommending Ot and or PT, I would also try and get a private eval on those as well. In terms of a computer, I have usually heard about this for older kids. Maybe you want to have a low tech PECS system which is a picture exchange system or even simple sign to relieve frustration. Use this year to bombard him with therapy. Also see if you can find a local advocate who can come to your IEP meeting with you. denise > Here is a little of my sons history.. My son is turning 4 August 27th.
