speaking and proprioception

Does anyone know who or what the best resource is for looking at the

link between Charge kids speaking and proprioception or balance

issues? My sons speech therapist and OT want to take a closer look at

this as everyone feels that my son Lucas should surely be speaking by

now, but cannot seem to. His sign language is excellent, both

receptively and expressively, and he is very bright - too bright the

teachers say, for him to simply be choosing sign over talking. He

hears well with this implant, and understands many spoken words, but

when he tries to reprocduce them - well - its just no where whatsover

even close (only in terms of number of syllables). So who should I

talk to for a game plan, I really want him to speak if its possible for

him. Ideas on resources would be appreciated. Lacey and Lucas 4 yrs

old

Dear Lacey,

There is a document about balance issues and walking and speaking. I'll

find the reference.

In the meantime, have apraxia and dysarthria been ruled out as possible

causes for the difficulty speaking? Is it clear he is hearing each of the

component sounds?

The apraxia-kids website is one of the premier sites to ask questions about

speech and language problems. The founder of the site is a parent who is

now a Ph.D candidate in Communication Disorders. Many speech and language

professionals participate in the list willingly offering advice about tests

and treatment therapy options. http://www.apraxia-kids.org I assure you you

will have many replies if you post this question on their listserve.

Very best to you and Lucas,

wendy :-)
