Guest guest Posted September 28, 2006 Report Posted September 28, 2006 http://www.parentlinks.org/index_files/Page4534.htm Yoshinaga-Itano, Ph.D., has studied the effects of early identification of hearing loss. The research is very convincing that whether for typically developing children with hearing loss or children with additional special needs, there is significant benefit to early identification and early intervention. She describes the development quotient (DQ) which rises notably with early intervention. (Hey, is this why Kendra is always signing " DQ " ?) I think you may want to keep the research in mind if anyone questions the benefit of early amplification or language intervention. The above linked article details important points from her study. Guest guest Posted September 29, 2006 Report Posted September 29, 2006 Yoshinaga-Itano's research really is interesting. It mentions additional disabilities to deafness which is a help for most of us in understanding the ramifications of the hearing loss. Her research confirms that once the hearing loss is identified, intervention is critical. The research gives great impetus to providing language input early. Her research came about at the time hearing screenings became more prevalent and provides definite justification for early intervention programs to focus on language acquisition. Food! Yes, we are never really too far from that topic are we? :-) It seems we are always creeping back to discussing sandwiches, potato chips and natto or other food related topics on Fridays. :-) :-) I didn't say that, did I? I think you brought up food. As for me, I think I'll stick with my organic breakfast tea, honey, and cream for today. ...So very glad to see you back on here, Pam! What's the problem? Is it an overloaded mailbox, or some other computer difficulty? :-) Re: early language importance , Interesting post and are you noticing that we are back to food pam > > http://www.parentlinks.org/index_files/Page4534.htm > > Yoshinaga-Itano, Ph.D., has studied the effects of early > identification of hearing loss. Guest guest Posted October 1, 2006 Report Posted October 1, 2006 , That was a great link. Early intervention is vital. Nice. Now you do know I'm right there with Kendra. It was my birthday the other day and quess what I got. A DQ ice cream cake! I go there at least twice to three times a week. Whatever will I do when DQ closes for the winter? Did you know that when it closes they have a sale on things they can't keep such as Dilly Bars? You can put them in your freezer and they can last for months! Bonnie Quote
