Hi Mike, For a meal, I want real food also. I have tried the Extend and Glucerna bars. They are okay to have in an emergency. Once in awhile, I may have part of a bar with a cup of coffee in the afternoon. The other week, Kroger had the South Beach Diet bars on sale. I bought some of those just to keep in the vehicle when I'm out shopping and need something before I get home. hugs Eunice Quote
Guest guest Posted June 24, 2006 Report Posted June 24, 2006 Has anyone tried those EXTEND BARS as advertised in the Diabetes magazines?? I have tried 4 different flovors so far, but I find them to be really, really sweet tasting, maybe because I have been off of sugar for awhile now. But I did find that they prevent " hunger from coming back so soon " and that alone is good for someone who used to love to have something in my mouth every hour no matter how small?? They say it is supposed to keep the bg even for 9 hours. What are your opinions on this bar?/ " TLC " Joyce Quote

Joyce, I didn't try Extend... but I did try Glucerna. I actually liked a couple of the Glucerna bars (good chocolate choice) but they aren't something I can keep handy when I'm on the go, so I don't usually get them. They have both 'snack' bars and meal replacement bars. Glucerna does help keep blood sugars stable for a period... I keep a few of the snack bars at home just in case I have a 3AM low (only happens a few times, if I do something stupid with food/insulin). I've never been much for the 'meal replacement' bar concept... they just taste like a snack and I still want my 'real' food... so it encourages me to overeat and I just avoid them. Mike Quote
Guest guest Posted June 24, 2006 Report Posted June 24, 2006 Mike, I agree 100% on the replacement bars, I too think of them as a snack and want REAL FOOD later, I only use or wanted to try these bars to see if it CUT my hunger and it did that for me, but I almost get sick from the sweetness, so I don't think I will be ordering them anymore. Thanks for your input, every opinion opens up new doors and other things to try. Guest guest Posted June 24, 2006 Report Posted June 24, 2006 Do you know what the basic ingredient is in these bars and how many cal or carbs they have? I can't " do " soy.... My A1C number and the stress in my life is interfering with good food choices so not loosing any weight right now :-( but I think comfort food at the moment is a necessity rather than a stupidity. another :-( JUDITH > > Joyce, I didn't try Extend... but I did try Glucerna. Guest guest Posted June 24, 2006 Report Posted June 24, 2006 > > Do you know what the basic ingredient is in these bars and how many cal or > carbs they have? I can't " do " soy.... Judith, The box of glucerna bars I have in front of me are the meal replacement bars (chocolate chunk). The ingredients do list a couple of soy products, but they also have grains and other things too. So I don't know how much soy is really in them... or how much (or what type) you can tolerate. The nutritional facts for 1 bar are: Calories 210 Fat 6g Carbs 34g Fiber 2g Sugar Alcohols 7g Protein 10g These don't spike me and they do keep things level for quite a time. My guess is this is due to the fat, protein and sugar alcohols. Exchange wise, they are 2 starch, 1/2 lean meat and 1 fat. Hope that helps. Mike Quote
Guest guest Posted June 24, 2006 Report Posted June 24, 2006 Thanks, Mike, I'm learning about how fat slows down carb absorbtions ( what ever that exactly means) which means to me I can have (YIPPEEE) bananas and/or blueberries and sourcream!!! :-)))) I just have to keep watching the calories because I'm almost on an eating binge due to " family problems " read STRESS!!!! I'll check these bars out and hope they don't start me binging even if my numbers are ok. Yesterday my A1C was 5.1 :-) that is down from 6.2 in Jan. The carbs are high at 34 but so is the fat at 6! I have no understanding (yet) about alcohol sugars and the stuff in smaller print under the whole carb number on the ingredients because my nutritionist firmly believes if it is under the carb # subtracting etc is just game playing and will make *me* nuts - she's probably right about the me being nuts part LOL. I have absolutely no idea at all what you are talking about when you say " exchange wise " . So much to learn yet. I am at that dangerous point calorie/eating wise that my BS#s are down to what I think is ok! NOT OK. GOT TO LOOSE 20 MORE LBS. I feel so much better and stronger it is unbelievable. And thank god Hershey came out with that sugar free (sucralose) choc syrup I found last week. An old fashioned egg cream does the job and is only 15 calories and about 5 carbs major :-)s!!! Saturday, after breakfast, we started looking at trucks for hubby. I thought we would be gone a short time. It was mid afternoon when we got back home. I knew I was getting lower than I wanted so I got a real Coke. Did not drink all of it though. Today, after breakfast went looking at trucks again. After looking, riding and sitting for about 5 hours, I knew I was getting low. The salesman we were talking with gave me a pack of peanut butter crackers. He has diabetes also. I am going to put extend bars or the south Beach Diet bars in both vehicles so I will have something when I need it. The 0% interest being offered on some of the vehicles this weekend is a great deal. hugs Eunice Quote

Guest guest Posted July 7, 2006 Report Posted July 7, 2006 Thanks! Called the 800# and they are sending them. Rep said they were 2g carbs and I couldn't believe it. So she explained to subtract the fiber and sugar alcholols..... ok. for me they are still 21g carbs LOL.... Also she said soy protein was the first ingredient (in the chocolate ones anyway) so I will see how I digest them since I have IBS and soy isn't one of my tummy's favorite things. She also said they were the size of a snickers bar but I forgot to ask her how many calories they were. I'll find out when they come. She was really very nice, too! :-) JUDITH > .
