Most type 2 diabetics who are well controlled don't eat much more than

125 gms of carbs per day. I usually suggest patients start about

there and work up or down according to blood sugars, weight, etc. I

eat right around 125 gms a day. Generally 220 grams is too high for

most diabetics to maintain good control and keep their weight stable.

Some diabetics eat as little as 15-20 gms of carbs a day. I think

that's kind of low and relies too much on fat for calories.

Ron - I am one of those that eats very few carbs in a day. If I eat more,

my BS goes soaring. I don't understand how the rest of you can eat 120 or

more carbs per day. Doesn't it raise your BS like it does mine?

I would love to eat more healthy, but I don't know how. Can you advise me

please?

Every diabetic if different in many aspects of their disease,

including how much carbs they can tolerate per day. Everyone has to

work it out for him/herself with the help of their doc and

nutritionist. For example, I do best on small doses of glipizide

and metformin and about 120 gms of carbs. If I increase my carbs

then I need to increase my meds to control my sugars and end up

gaining weight. If I lower my carbs a lot then I have to try to cut

my meds to avoid hypoglycemia, and end up with my blood sugars

having poorer control with more spikes. It took a fair amount of

time to work that out.

I don't think eating healthy is that difficult. I try to spread my

carbohydrate intake evenly throughout the day with about 30 gms at

each meal and 2-3 10 gms snacks. I eat about 6-8 oz. of meat or

fish a day. The rest is almost all vegetables. Eggs are fine for

breakfast. I use almost exclusively olive oil (2nd choice canola

oil). I very rarely eat prepared food or fast food. There are tons

of good low carb recipes available.

I could be jumping the gun on all of this at this point. I am on

metformin..started out at 500 mg a day, working my way up to 2000 mg a day

adding 500

more each week. Sunday I will be adding another 500 mg, which will bring me

up to 1500. So maybe that will help.

All of this started out with me trying to find somewhere to get a listing of

the optimum levels of the different nutrients so that I can add them to my

diet software and track how well I am actually eating.

I know some people wouldn't want to think of it this way....

but...

If you eat a healthy balanced diet and your blood sugar is too high,

wouldn't that mean you need additional medications for your diabetes? A

little more metformin? The addition of a little insulin? Or an increase in

your insulin? (Or whatever adjustment you doctor wanted to make based upon

a healthy balanced diet).

I choose not to live my life feeling like I'm deprived of things I love.

This doesn't mean that dinner is macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes with

gravey and chocolate cake for dessert! But it does mean if I want a little

cake on occasion, I can fit it into my diet. Not every day, and not a huge

slice. But it also doesn't mean 'never!'

I refuse to live my life miserable and cranky because I can't enjoy

chocolate, or fruits or even have an occasional sandwich because I want to

have an 'extreme' low carb diet just to avoid medications to treat my

illness. That's not living life. It's simply existing.

If you can control your blood sugars simply by modifying your diet from an

extreme of drastic amounts of sugar filled pop, candy, breads and pasta to a

healthy and balanced diet... great! Good for you! You are lucky! But not

everyone can, and not everyone can live on 6 grams of carbs a day (ok, an

exageration, but you get my point).

I'm not sure what to change the subject line to but I wanted to tell

everyone that I found CHOCOLATE!!!! Hershey is now making a no sugar

chocolate syrup with sucralose (I can only use sucralose). It is 15 cal and

4 carbs for 2T. I make an 'egg cream' out of it. Neat drink: however much

plain selzter water, 1T 2% lactaid, 2T Hershey Chocolate syrup, and 1 1/2 T

of Splenda granules. For my taste the extra splenda makes the chocolate

taste more chocolate-y. Others might enjoy it less sweet?

anyway, when I find something that works for me I try to remember to share

it.
