Guest guest
Hi, Everyone - Well, the sports injuries have actually started for Josh. Three and a half years ago we were wondering if he would ever walk (or talk) because of the hypotonia, etc. Now, I had to run him to the doc yesterday at 5:00, then to the hospital for X-rays - fractured thumb! The fracture is right in the growth plate so they will have to immobilize the hand/thumb to avoid any future problems (and additional injury since he still does fall sometimes when he's really tired). So, we're going today to an orthopedic guy to see what we can do to set it. The frustrating part of this (as if the fracture itself wasn't enough) - he fell on the playground right next to his teacher and an aide. They were concerned with his lip (he got a small cut on the bottom lip) so they were giving him an ice cube, etc. He kept holding up his hand (teacher said, when I called her last night to find out what exactly happened, he cried for only a minute and then stopped crying) but didn't say anything about it, just held it up. They thought maybe he scraped it or something so gave it a little kiss and went back to worrying about his lip. The fall came just before the end of the day - by the time he got to me on the bus, he couldn't use his hand to hold onto the bus seat or railing to get off the bus and his thumb was already swollen quite a lot. He came into my office to have a cracker snack and couldn't hold the crackers (of course, it's his right hand - just when he's getting really good at holding things, using pencils and stuff, changing his own clothes, using the computer!), then started crying a lot. He laid down to sleep, fell asleep immediately and slept for two hours - I didn't have the heart to wake him to look at his hand/thumb at that point since he was so tired. But, when he woke up, I asked a couple of the guys in the office what their op was and they said it looked like a fracture - that's when I got him to the doc. If only he could have said something more concrete to his teachers or if only they could have understood what he was doing with his hand by showing it to them, then we could have taken care of it all yesterday and maybe he wouldn't have been in as much pain overnight and this morning!!!! Gosh, I hate this!!! He's talking but not enough/not with appropriate words at times that he really needs to - absolutely not his fault and that's not what I'm saying at all. I'm just so frustrated that my kid has apraxia/dysarthria!!! This is one of those times, and I can honestly say I don't do this often at all, when I have to say, Why my kid???? Guest guest
I included a similar scenario when appealing with our insurance company for speech therapy after my son turned 3. lack of speech ability affects medical health in that if a child can't communicate that he is hurt, it could be dangerous or prolong pain. Hang in there Sherry! I am so glad that you were able to get him appropriate care. Let us know how his recovery goes. Guest guest
This just may be a normal kid thing. When I was 11, I fell off the monkey bars at a neighbors house. My mom was watching me when this happened. For three days it hurt, but everyone kind of dismissed it. I didn't cry a lot (if any), it was just uncomfortable. Finally, after 3 days my mom took me to the doctors, and I had a broken arm. Sometimes kids just don't know what to think.
Guest guest
Hi Sherry, Sorry to hear about Josh, hope he's feeling better. Try not to be to upset, i have the same worry about my daughter Ellie, but saying that i worry about my other two children nearly the same amount and they have no trouble speaking for themselves. When i was 3 i had quite a serious leg injury, but because it was internal it was hard to spot for quite a while, it hurt like hell , but anytime a adult asked me how it felt, i just said it hurts a little. That went on for months, i dont know why? I had perfect speech. Sometimes thats just the way things happen, dont beat yourself up about it. Just put it down to a casualty of childhood. Take care, love to Josh. Jane
Guest guest
Yeah, I think if I hadn't consulted with the two sports fanatics in my office when Josh woke from his nap on Monday, and they said it looked fractured, I probably would have held off going to the doc as well - I've sprained or strained pretty much everything on my body and know that time will heal that rather than a doc visit. But it just looked weird when I compared his thumb to the other one (he has beautiful, long, slender fingers - his thumb was discolored, swollen and had an extra lump on it!) and that little voice in me said to take him. It is fractured right along the base of the thumb in the growth plate - he's got a nice blue cast on it now. His speech path said she thought he was trying to tell everyone something, that he actually was crying and holding his hand, but they weren't paying close enough attention since they were more concerned with his lip bleeding (no big deal there). Oh well, maybe next time they'll get it! Sherry luckygmstwife <suzi_knowles@...> wrote: This just may be a normal kid thing. When I was 11, I fell off the monkey bars at a neighbors house.
