Guest guest
I don't belong to TAA because as an individual I don't have the money to spend on it. I also have had to cut back on my trips to Austin for meetings now that I'm retired and on a fixed income. So I'm forced to watch from the sidelines and comment from my perspective here at Rattlesnake Hill. When I was a member of the EMSAT board, I found that I was spending about $3,500 per year, unreimbursed, for expenses just to attend the meetings and the GETAC meetings. I can no longer afford to do that. Lots of the folks who get to go to Austin to meetings get their expenses paid by their employers. I don't. So that's why you don't see me there anymore. Guest guest
I am in perfect agreement. Let's have some set rules about job postings which require the name and license number of the organization. Guest guest
Hey Gene, A ... I'm glad to see you active again, and 2 ... I'd be willing to fund some of your trips to meetings just to have an active " doer " for EMS. As much as I want to, I don't have the time or energy or smarts for that matter to help with positive changes in EMS, but I would love to see it happen. I could name at least 20 people in Texas that could come together and make things happen ... in my opinion. Talk, talk, talk ... you brain children need to make it happen. Actually, I'm sure there are more than 20 people, but just some of the folks on this list could do powerful stuff if they came together and " did " instead of just " talk. " There are many of us who would be very supportive and I feel there are many out there who would support that aren't on this list that don't have the knowledge of what's going on. Blah, blah, blah, where do I send the check to help you help us in EMS? , LP, RN In a message dated 5/23/2006 7:05:54 PM Central Standard Time, wegandy1938@... writes: I don't belong to TAA because as an individual I don't have the money to spend on it. Guest guest
When I was looking for a job, I always bypassed places that just had a phone number. My thought is that if you were trying to hide your name, what else are you hiding from me? Why won't you share your company name or salary range with me? Not everyone does their homework, but even so, those who don't shouldn't have to get screwed simply because they are naive or ignorant. Most of us here would rather take less and work for a known provider then some new company with only a few months in business. I will admit that when I finally got fed up with EMS and got screwed twice (once by a municipal service on pay and the second time by a private service) I called DSHS and asked for a list of services in good standing. Then I started asking friends about these services, and finally I went and asked their employees what they thought about the service. The few hours of work has provided me with employment at a service I like working for. I will say it here, EMS in Houston is the most corrupt industry I have ever seen. Could you imagine if the media ever got a hold of what goes on in EMS in Houston? Dateline could run a years worth of episodes on nothing but the corruption of EMS in Houston. The problem is that it makes it hard to find good employees and a good employer because of the over whelming scum in EMS (both sides) who need to be eliminated (how is for another post at another time). Yet another problem that I have faced in the Houston area has to do with other services trying to hire me while I'm working. I have been approached by one service in the Clear Lake area who's employees have tried to offer me a job while I was still patient loaded. I will not name this service on the board, but I will say that trying to hire me while I bag a patient is probably not the best way to find quality employees. I here it all the time, so and so is paying this or that. I might not be the highest paid, but at least I know my job is there day after day, my pay check clears the bank, and I don't have DSHS and the FBI asking me questions. So in conclusion, I think that the moderators should require so much information to be provided in " now hiring " posts. We can't control what the news paper does, but we can control what goes on in here. I would think that protecting the members of this online community would be of top concern for the moderators. Guest guest
I am not a member of TAA. I can't say that I either support it or that I do not. It's a trade organization for ambulance owners, and I'm more interested in the interests of individual medics. That's why I am a member of and support EMSAT. I do think TAA does and has done some good things, but I view it as being a trade organization, rather than broadly representative of the interests of EMS. Guest guest
I too do not wish further government intervention unless absolutely needed. The problem as I see it posted on this list (and have seen first hand working for the FNB's) is that the regulation along with a healthy set of teeth to assure proper regulation, is not there. There has to be a way to get this to come about without setting limits that may, or then again may not; limit the services for a large metropolitan area and possibly the services for the rural areas as well. The " Cream Of The Crop " will usually be around long after the FNB's have folded. I would have to state that until we become a " needed " resource like that of Fire and Law Enforcement with our legislature setting this into law, that we will continue to have these problems. I get concerned when we talk about limiting the number of services or only wanting the local governmental agencies to allow EMS services to operate. As long as we allow the local politicians to control what we as EMS professionals make (without allowing them to make a significant amout off of us) we will continue to have to be on assistance programs to be able to feed our families. As stated in Economics 101, supply and demand is what drives wages up. We have a limited supply, the demand is great, so where are the wages? We need to come together on what our wages should be. This is an employer issue. We need to assure the recovery for services is there. This is a regulation issue. As long as we are in the mode to think that our services should be less expensive than that of a plumber we will be stuck in the same dugout. But then again life has always taken a backdoor to making money. Where is the answer? I believe it is in organizing and becoming a strong force. Other professions have seen this and it appears it worked. We need to form a strong force here in Texas if change is to come about. That is why I joined EMSAT. I haven't seen much come of this yet though. Ok my rambling is finished for now. wegandy1938@... wrote: The subject of requiring a provider to do 911 was broached by Bob Kellow after I mentioned that I was now thinking that certificates of need might be a good thing for Texas. Bob said that certificates of need have been politicized and have been difficult to administer. So I said that perhaps the requirement that any EMS service be engaged in 911 wouldn't be a bad idea. Now, there are many possible views of this and many positions to take. You have now stated some interesting questions. What we need is a good, free-wheeling debate about how to limit the ridiculous proliferation of EMS providers while still maintaining fundamental freedoms in marketing. However, there are certain areas of business that need to be regulated more stringently than the Mom and Pop Donut Shop. I submit that EMS service is one of them. Yes, people do die from donuts, but not for a long time. People can die from incompetent EMS, and it happens all the time. Worse, the job market for Paramedics is good now, and that makes it even more important that every individual looking for a job realizes that there are some employers, maybe many employers, who are out and out crooks. And they need to watch out for them. I hate government regulation. It's against my nature. But there are times when it's the only way to control functions that can do great harm if not controlled. Yesterday I asked for anyone from TAA to comment on this situation. I find it instructive that up to now there has not been a word written by anybody from that organization on this subject. I know some of them monitor this list. Why doesn't TAA step up to the plate on this issue? Could it be...........Could it Beeeeee.......Could it be that TAA is made up of a bunch of fly-by-nights who don't want any sort of regulation? Nah. Or, well, maybe? Hmmmm. We'll see. Gene G. Guest guest
Problem is that there will always be FNB's to replace the ones that exit the market. EMS is also over saturated with industry groups that get nothing done because they can't all agree to come together as one large group to represent EMS. > The subject of requiring a provider to do 911 was broached by Bob Kellow > after I mentioned that I was now thinking that certificates of need might be a > good thing for Texas. > > Bob said that certificates of need have been politicized and have been > difficult to administer. Guest guest
To all, I always sit here and read and listen to what goes on in the EMS world. The message I get from all my readings is to " UNITE " . I received an e-mail that I would like to share with everyone that can be found on this web-site http://patriotfilesannex.org/Pledge.htm . If you have time please take a moment to watch it and listen to the definitions. It just seemed appropriate for the conversations. Everyone has a voice and it might be heard but " UNITED " the voice will become a ROAR. I will step off my soapbox now and go back to listening. Thank you for all you do for the people in our Great State of Texas. May the Good Lord watch over all of you and keep you safe.
