She loves to write, but when I read what she wrote, it never makes sense. As far as I know, she does not get up and wander, but it always seems like she has plenty of time to doodle. Every day she comes home with 4 or 5 pages of just doodling. I'm wondering what she's supposed to be doing in that time. My 5(almost 6) year old son is doing some writing in school during what they call writers workshop and he is having some problems staying on task I guess you could say. He will not do it and ends up walking around the classroom. I am wondering if this is common in children with AS and if so what is the best way to handle it? We are still waiting for the IEP to go through but I thought I would get some suggestions for the teacher to try in the mean time. Thanks! Guest guest Posted December 9, 2005 Report Share Posted December 9, 2005 : My daugher's writing is awful too. She cannot spell and often she even writes words with missing letters. I have asked her why if she reads so much she has such bad spelling. Her answer is that when she reads (she does it really fast) she does not see the words, " I just see pictures in my mind " . His writing is terrible and he hates it, probably because it takes too long. He sees the lines on the paper but the writing is all over the place and the letters are in different sizes. I just don't think his brain & eyes are working together on this. However, when he draws he is able to have great detail. And of course he has no problem playing video games. Just writing. Guest guest Posted December 9, 2005 Report Share Posted December 9, 2005 hi there, I'm new here & have just started the journey into AS territory with my 7yr old son. I'm not sure if it's helpful but my son also dislikes writing...one suggestion that school has had is that the vibration of the pencil lead on the paper bothers him. He uses erasable pen to complete his work. He definately has to be in the mood but it does seem easier to get him to write if it's not with a pencil.
