I think we would have a hard time getting insurance and/or medicare

to pay for a segway.

Seriously, why don't some of you very bright, gifted, men get

together and make a PLS/ALS/HSP version? Galen, Don, Vaughn

others??? - construct an adult type walker - PVC pipe for bath - put

rollers and four wheels on it. Then we can walk around the house,

keep our muscles moving, and not fall. I could sure use an adult

walker when I cook. Sell them and use the profits for research.

Please - we may even be able to dance in them.

Funny you should mention that. One of the things I fuss with every now and

then is a method of transportation. I don't envision it with wheels,

however. I envision more of a thing kind of like a little toddler's indoor

swing with articulated legs. Think more of a " walking chair " than a

wheelchair. The seat could be adjusted so you could just sit in it if

desired or the seat could be raised up so you could use the device much

like a conventional walker. Stability in motion would be achieved by

moving only one of the four legs at a time, so three of the legs would

always remain on the ground. Among its advantages would be that it would

be able to handle most any kind of terrain or even steps. It wouldn't

require any balance and it would be easily adjustable so that it could meet

a wide range of assistance needs. Among the drawbacks are that it might be

very difficult to move the legs, although some sort of power assist might

well be adapted to help with that, and that it would be tediously slow,

though a little help from some simple microprocessors might address that

drawback. Why does it have to have wheels? People don't have wheels.

As usual, Galen, your over my head. I just want something on wheels

to move when I move. If my feet get left behind I won't fall. It

would probably look like the old fashioned baby walkers.

Things I could do:

walk from my sink to the stove and ref.

prepair a meal without falling

get right up to the sink to wash veg. or my hands

hurry to answer the phone or the door when it rings

reach the high cabinets for a glass

hang my washed clothes from the dryer without falling sideways or

backward

dance

The part I have trouble with is how to get in and out of it. Any

suggestions? RONNIE - how about you?
