With Teddy, we had really early ABRs that were a nightmare...we were

trying to keep him asleep, because they don't like to sedate kids

younger than three months or so. Those ABRs we had (unsedated) were very

stressful to administer -- one took four hours! When he was three and a

half years old, we finally had an ABR where they sedated him with

chloryl hydrate (I talked to my pediatrician first, who assured me it

was generally the safest way to sedate little ones). THAT was finally

the ABR that was actually accurate. We learned that we'd had his hearing

aids turned up a little too high, which also was so stressful.

The other thing to remember is, they are going to ensure that they go up

to the threshold of residual hearing, so if he has any hearing at all,

he's going to hear the loudest sounds they make, which can also wake him

up. That was another benefit to us of sedation.
