Guest guest
I am a security guard at a site with a brewery on it. The handicap spaces were being massively abused. I wrote my own tickets(just a warning) and called the cops. 3-4 people got tickets within a month or two but every weekend someone would park there anyway even when I give them verbal warnings and my written warning. The gall of some people. I suggested to the client to move the overhead signs closer infront of the spaces and to repaint the decals and people are starting to get the picture, havent caught anyone in a couple months. One lady not at my job site but at a shopping center parked in the van accessible part of the handicap space when I was getting my mom out into her wheelchair. She got out of her truck and casually walked away plainly seeing the handicap sign, me and my mom, and the blue paint. I said " you know thats a no parking zone right? " she said " yea, I know " and kept walking, i then, in a louder voice said " you know its a $350 fine if a cop comes? " she didnt respond and went into a bank really close by. What she didnt realize i guess is the sherrif station is right there in that shipping center, good for me, bad for her. I walked over there with my mom a sherrif got in his car, i walked back over to the spot and met with the lady as she was coming out of the bank the cop gave her a ticket. $350 for a less than 10 min parking stop to go to the bank after my verbal warning. I felt good to see someone pay a fine because she did get a warning i just hope she learns a lesson and not do it again. i try to be vigilent( i think thats the correct word) when it comes to handicap spaces. Just my experiences, Re: Earthlings response to our helpful devices Maureen: I am so sorry for your unpleasant experiences of " earthlings " response to your cane/walker etc. I have had the exact opposite. In fact I plan on writing to a columnist from Newsday about all the strangers that have helped me...without me asking for help. I must admit that my walkers are decorated with butterfly decals and I have a bicycle horn on each walker. People seem to focus on the decorated walker rather than me. I think that the kid's responses are because they haven't seen a person with a walker....so when a kid looks at my walker I ask them if they would like to honk the horn, and I honk it. I have made many friends with my " crazy walkers. " Last week I was waiting on the sidewalk, in a small shopping mall, for the traffic to stop so I could cross the street. A woman, a perfect stranger, went out into the middle of the street and held up her hands, like a traffic cop. Every car stopped as she waved me to cross the street. I must admit that I was a little awkward about everything stopping for me....but was overwhelmed with a stranger's kindness. Friends have told me that others have told them that they admire my determination. Each day I try to find an opportunity and know that a challenge is usually attached. So often the challenges are the doors. To be handicapped accessible doors have to be wide enough for a wheelchair....nothing about the weight of the door...most stores do not seem to have the " buttons " to use, but it seems that someone always appears to help. Sorry this is so long, but I had to share my wonderful experiences with strangers helping me. Hope that everyone is having a lots of good days. Guest guest
Great job , People can be so selfish, if there were more people like you turning these idiots in we wouldnt have such a hard time with these spaces. Guest guest
I know there are all kinds of handicaps but yesterday I saw one I didn't quite understand. We were at Sam's Club and next to us was a couple that had parked in a handicap space they where using Sign Language. They may have had other issues but I didn't see any mobility problems. That was a first for us..................Flora
Guest guest
, Thank you for doing that. If we all did this it might make others think before they park in these spaces. What did you find out about care givers being paid for there services? Guest guest
I have yet to call SSA directly but my great aunt who takes care of her mother gets paid minimum wage for 5 hours a day. Only 5 hours a day because she is bed ridden so the gov't figures the family will be there anyway so why pay them for any more.
