Thank you ,

I am starting to get nervous now... my ENT asked me

what meds he was on and I only thought of the

ampicilin at birth as I had not read his birth report

entirely as the ENT appt was the same day I got it. I

wish I had known as I would have mentioned it to him

then.

Do you think this is at least in part the reason for

Ricky's loss?? Should I bring it up to the

audiologist on WEdnesday for his ABR?

Thanks!

Hey all, my son was not on any of these meds when born, so we know his loss

is not related to them. But I was on some very serious drugs for quite a while

before and after the births. They didn't after the kids, but there were

changes in me that are permanent (I think after 10-years we can stop calling

them

" long term " )

My very simple point is that there was a trade-off. I wanted my children

alive and healthy, and I wanted to be here to raise them. We knew there might be

some after-effects, but the trade-off seemed worth it at the time. I am here,

and so are both of them.

Had Ian's hearing loss been due to my meds, I would have felt incredibly

guilty for a while. But the simple fact that we are all here and basically

healthy makes a hearing loss look like small potatoes compared with what could

have been. Ian is now 14 and I still have pangs of guilt and sadness, I think

that is perfectly normal for a mom.

So, please do not beat yourself up over the medicines given to a premie. At

that point in your life, the thoughts are along the lines of " please, God,

make this better, let us live " -- those were my prayers. And they were answered

-- he did, we both did. The hearing loss is minor when I compare it to those

early prayers and fears.

Best -- Jill
