Guest guest
, Glad to hear you are making progress. I don't want to start a conflict about signing but ... If I understand right, he hasn't even been aided. I would really push for amplification (aids, sound fields, ...) to make the most of his current hearing. If it is progressive and eventually aids are not beneficial a cochlear implant is a valid option. I see kids at Moog in St. Louis making great progress using implants. Would you think about visiting the oral schools in the St. Louis area? I can help you set up a tour. This seems to support his current oral skills (again, I may not be remembering your story correctly). Yes, you all could learn to sign now but realistically there is only so much time in a day. We chose to develop 's oral skills while she still had a chance. She is interested in signing and we are learning some (she says the words as she signs). I am glad the advocate is helping with the school district. Be careful about taking medical advice from advocates. The technology available to kids with hearing loss has changed dramatically over the past 10 years. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help. The lack of services in rural areas frustrates me. IDEA doesn't say this is the law unless you live in ______. Mom to 12, 7 (n24 4/00) and 4 ----- Original Message ----- And by the way she (the co-op advocate says that he needs hearing aids with 50db loss like he has and if it is progressive as they say why not take advantage of what he has now? Also she said they have to provide signlanguage classes for him and us .She said why not teach him while he can hear ?
