Guest guest Posted June 4, 2004 Report Share Posted June 4, 2004 Hi All, How appropriate I should get home frojm work tonight afterover an hour in traffic an accident and there is no alternate route home only 1 road through the canyon, anyway I made it home safe and sound, but of all days to read my email and the posts about handicapped parking. Where I work the company has a large complex 5 buildings in fact they call it a campus it is very pretty all gated all 5 buildings face in and out but on the inside is a large nicely landscaped square and outside area very pretty. There is a lot of parking and quite a bit of handicapped parking, in fact in the building where I work there are about16 handicapped parking spaces and it has never been a problem until today, they were all full, so I had to drive around to find another place to park and a handicapped spot because even though I don't need to be close because I can wheel itbut I need room to get my wheelchair in and out of my car so I ended up parking way around on the side of the complex and by another building other than mine and quite a distance which is O.K. during the day but I don't get off work until 10:30 P.M. so it's dark when I go out to my car, plus I was 9 minutes late because of having to drive around and look for a parking spot, 2 cars didn't have placards that I could see or license plates so I did mention it to security on my way through one of the buildings, I was so mad I could have spit and I called all of the people parked in the spots not nice names in my mind, I know 1 of the cars parked in handicapped is legitimate the lady is older, gee maybe older than me she has white hair I have blonde anyway she uses a walker, there is only 1 other person that I know of who works there in a wheelchair but he doesn't work on Fridays so none of the cars were his, another 2 cars belong to 2 older guys who maybe have heart trouble, they don't walk funny or anythhing like that, one of the vehicles was a Ford Excursion, I don't see how any handicapped person can get in one of those, at least not by themselves, my son & daughter in law have an excursion and my son has to boost me up into the front seat of theirs if I go anywhere with them. I believe that a lot of these people aren't entitled to the placards they have but they have them anyway, it infuriates me, the worst though is the big raised trucks cause it's like come on how do you get in that vehicle. I wasn't the happiest person today and the kicker is there really isn't anything anyone can do if they have the placard. Someone was it said something about the numbers on the placard matching the drivers license number, well here in Ca the placard has a registration card and it is supposed to match and they can ask to see the registration for the placard. I have license plates and the placard which is nice if I ever go anywhere in someone elses car, and it's nice to have it to get someone to come out & pump gas for me, which is another big pain for us gimps, so I won't even get started on that one. And Sueme I read somewhere about a state or maybe a city here in Ca that does have handicapped volunteers who do patrol the handicapped parking spots but that is a great idea and I think all states & municipalities should think about something like that, we need to get mor vocal and become more of a voting block, like AARP and some of the unions and hire a lobbyist and stuff like that. Well I guess I've ranted enough tonight, someday we'll solve the worlds problems & right all of the wrongs. " " Nature In Phoenix we have something called S.O.S... Save our Spaces. It is hotline number you can call if you catch a non disabled person parking in handicap space. They will try to send an officer, but if they can't, if you give them the time, date, place and license number of the vehicle, they will SEND them at ticket. I believe there is a $250 fine for parking in a Handicap space without a tag. A friend of mine caught a truck parked across 4 spots in front of a building. He asked the driver to move and the driver said, I'm just here to make a delivery, I'll only be a minute. Well, my friend called it in and the truck driver received 4 $250 fines!!!! Isn't that great! People just have no idea! Bonnie G - Phoenix Az All great ideas, now let's find a way to apply these efforts nation wide, because everyday we have more and more people getting handicapped tags, especially with the baby boomers becoming seniors. Wally World usually has more handicapped parking places than most parking lots and I have the most difficulty trying to find a handicapped space in their parking lot. As time passes, the problem will multiply and now is the time to act before it is to late and we are the ones to voice our opinions and get this in motion. This terrible neurological disease has taken another life, by now the news has traveled world wide, one of our leaders has passed with Alzheimer's disease, President Reagan.
