Progress has been extremely slow. My son didn't start in therapy until he was 3 adn is 6.5 now. We started out with " regular " speech therapy which not only didn't help but taught him some bad habits that he still persists with (clenches his jaw) etc. Then once we figured things out more we did more of a neurodevelopmental approach and tons of oral motor exercises. He did get a bit better movement from his tongue but his overall speech didn't improve though he also stopped falling behind as fast. Now just about 10 months ago we started PROMPT therapy and he has made noticeable progress for the first time. He still lacks even some 2 year old sounds like p,b,v, and m that need more bilabial stuff than he can do yet but his approaximations are getting more intelligible. He does have normal/high language skills and vocab just mostly the physical stuff of getting the words out in an understandable way as well as a few pragmatic language things. Patience is pretty important as well as knowing when to give up on a therapist/apporach adn move on. YVonne
Guest guest
has both, and her twin sister just had apraxia. The first thing that our therapist worked on was trying to get 's oral muscles stronger. She would blow bubbles, lick peanut butter off of sticks, suck on straws, etc. was 4 1/2 before she could say " I want " . She was 5 1/2 before she really talked. At 7 1/2, she is talking. She has a large vocabulary, but her speech has a long way to go. She can now say every sound, but she loses it in connected speech. She's pretty much mastered 1 and 2 syllable words, but 3 or more is still hard. Her twin sister was talking at 3. At 7 1/2, is can say just about everything. She still sometimes will say " Oh, what's that word. " Then she'll try to sound it out and get stuck. I think her vocabulary is smaller than other kids her age. However, she is very bright. There is only 1 boy in her class that is better at math, and another boy in her class that writes better than her. She is a great reader. Most people don't even know that she ever struggled with her speech. They just think she is quiet and shy. Good luck with your son. Every child is different when they have a speech problem. Don't get too discouraged when you hear about kids progressing further than your son.
