Re: Left Handed? Right Handed? Anyone else struggling w/ this?

Hi ,

If it eases your mind at all, my son Chase just turned 4yo, attended an

integrated preschool last year, and was not forced to use one hand over the

other. However, the OT worked with him over the school year to get him to

cross midline with either hand, which is something he still has a problem

with. If something he wants is on the left of him he will you his left hand

to get the object, and the same thing goes for the right. He still has not

demonstrated a hand dominance.

Chase will be starting his second year of preschool Aug. 23rd, and it was

discussed at his IEP meeting that this one of the goals that will carry over

from the last IEP. I have been told not to worry, he will eventually choose

a hand dominance or he just might be ambidextrous (my grandfather is

ambidextrous, so maybe it just runs in the family).

I would tend to think that a special needs preschool would and should be

better prepared to deal with situations like this, and not force him to use

one hand over the other.

don't worry. Both my sons are left handed, one typical developing, my other

" not typical " . No one has ever tried to change what hands they use.

Hi, -

Josh turned 6 in May and didn't really show a preference for either hand

until the past year. He still uses his right hand for most things (including

writing/coloring) but will pick up stuff with his left hand. When he was in

developmental preK they worked on both hands crossing midline quite extensively.

Maybe this means he'll be good a baseball or something (catch with the left,

throw with the right? The Cubs would certainly do with a little bit of help!).

My 4yo daughter is very left handed and her preschool has never tried

to force her to write with her right hand. My son (3yo at end of

month) does not show an obvious preference to either hand. My

grandfather was a left-handed ambidextrous, so maybe my son will be

also. Two of my sisters write with their right hands, but do

everything else (bat, bowl, etc.) with their left hand. It just is

in the genes how people use their hands.
