except I took 10 first day 10 second day then 5 mg a day. I went in for my INR

weeks after the first dose I think..but im not sure it could have been a

little earlier?

My cardiologist started me 18 months ago at 2.5 per day, and a week later I

was in the high end of the INR range, and have stabilized over the months at

roughly 17.5 per week, plus or minus 2.5. I have learned from reading this

forum that what people need to maintain INR is all over the place, from 2 per

day to 10 or more per day. 10 per day to start sounds awfully high to me, it's

not really a " double dose, " it's just really on the high end of what people

take.

On the other hand, the dangers at the low end (stroke) tend to be greater than

those at the high end (internal bleeding and intracranial bleeding), so you

might

want to ask to have your INR tested about 3 days rather than waiting a week -

you might be one of those whose INR pops right up. I've learned that, in this

condition, when you don't feel comfortable with something, ask, ask, ask....be

balky if you feel as though you're being put in potential danger. All my best.

Lenny, I just had ankle surgery and that is exactly how my coumadin

nurse brought my INR back up following the surgery. I had gone off

coumadin for 5 days prior to the surgery and my INR was 1.0, which my

coumadin nurse says is " normal " for a person who has never taken

coumadin. The normal range is .9 to 1.1.

So, I took 10 mg the evening after surgery, 10 mg the following

evening and then resumed my regular schedule of 5 mg and 7.5 mg on

alternating days. Got my INR checked a week later and I was back up

to 2.3. No problem at all. I also followed that schedule following my

aflutter ablation last year. Worked perfectly. Good luck. Sounds like

your doctor knows what she is talking about.

My doctor did the same in order to jumpstart the process and avoid clots.

I suggest you follow her/his advice.

Sounds ok to me. Perhaps what you read on the web referred to those

already on coumadin and that they should not double up if they miss

a dose (as with many other meds).
