Hi Caro

Just a very quick reply as Freya is pukey and needs much attention this

evening

:(

TBT is a chemical which has been found in a Greenpeace study to affect the

gender of whelks - ie they change from male to female on prolonged exposure.

It is found in nappies in Europe. There was a bit of a brouhaha when

Greenpeace first published the study, as a result of which it was withdrawn

in nappies in Germany but was found still to be present in nappies in the UK

in Feb this year.

Sodium Polyacrylate is the gel in disposables which absorbs moisture. It

has been suggested that it has links with Toxic Shock Syndrome, and while

the manufacturers dispute this, they have withdrawn it from use in sanitary

products. It can sometimes be seen as crystals of clear gel on a baby's

bottom at changing time. I have read claims that it is completely harmless

(even in Mothercare books!) but this is not proven. In fact, it has been

shown to enter the body through nappy rash, and can exacerbate the rash. It

has also been associated with scarring on the urethra in boys, and inside

the vagina for girls.

As I say, these are issues are generally challenged, and the jury is out.

But I'm not entirely happy to use my children as primate studies :)

Must go - DH nagging about bathtime, and we've got to try and get Freya to

keep some fluid down.

Dear Vicki

What is TBT? What does it do ? (adversely and also in the nappies)

What might sodium polyacrylate do?

Yes, disposables are very helpful esp with new babies and if you get PND

(not discussion) but there is the thorny question which bugged me about it

being an offence to put poo in the rubbish - my bogs have never had very

enthusiastic flushes (obviously past the Change) enough to carry off enough

of the poo - unless you put in a really flushable liner, which slightly

defeats the convenience angle, esp as I found it hard to track down

flushable liners at times when my 2 were in nappies. That was pre-internet,

dinosaur days!

cheers

Caro
