AFIB...was put on coumadin........and told that she was in no danger

of anything....she would be on the medication for 3 weeks and go back

to the cardiologist to have her heart shocked to get it back to

rythym.......one week after being put on the medication she

died..........what type of side effects does coumadin have on a

person...and is it common to have this happen.......would appreciate

ome feedback thanks<<<

I am so very sorry for your loss.

As for your questions, I would first direct you to find out the cause

of death and see if it points toward coumadin or not. For example, if

there was a " bleed " , that could possibly be attributed to coumadin.

Also, I would suggest finding out if it was related to a more fatal

heart rhythm (ie: vtach, prolonged a-flutter leading to heart attack)

or heart disease (heart attack, heart failure, etc). It's so hard to

really know without having at least an initial report from the

medical professionals.

While it is true that afib in general does not in and of itself cause

sudden death - some medications have complications, and even with or

without medication, there is a possibility of fatal stroke. And

often a person with afib can also have other heart issues that are

more dangerous than the afib itself.

The major side effect of coumadin is bleeding. Do you know the cause of death?

It was reported that she had a heart attack......she had an echiogram

done on her and the doctors then diagnosed her with AFIB so they

never considered anything else wrong with her heart at

all....shouldn't they have at least done further examinations to make

sure it wasn't anything serious? especially since she had diabetes,

and high blood pressure?

I'm so very sorry to hear about your mother and I know this must be a very

difficult time for you and your family. I have been on Coumadin for almost

6 years and yes, there are some side effects and some risks. However,

coumadin usually takes at least a week to even get to a therapeutic level,

much less a very high level in which serious bleeding might occur. Sine only

a week transpired between her starting the Coumadin and her death I would be

surprised if the Coumadin were at fault. I know you plan to talk with her

doctor and I'm certain he or she can tell you what most likely happened.

Again, my condolences.
