I use one for my son, 3.5 non-dx'd PDD, etc. I ordered the weights from www.abilitations.com, and then bought a heavyweight (but not too much) denim material and used a simple children's vest pattern from Simplicity and then added pockets for the weights, 4 in front, 4 in back and it is connected by tan velcro on the sides. I used brown buttons in the front to close it. It looks like a cowby vest from a distance and does not look therapeutic at all. Seth enjoys wearing it, he uses it at school and is having one made (I didn't make it!) for at-home use so that we don't have to transfer it back and forth. Before we went to that we tried a slightly over sized t-shirt with a pocket sown in front and in back. We used metal washers from Home Depot for the weights. You could try that a first to see if he would wear it, and it also wouldn't look terribly theraputic. Eileen
Guest guest
<Does anyone use weighted vests for their kids?> They put in one when he first started Nursery School last January. It worked for a couple of weeks then he seemed to get used to it and he didn't seem to notice it was on. However, now since he has been on the diet there is no need for the vest. Guest guest
Charlene, My daughter Maranda has been wearing a weighted vest at school for about 3 yrs ( except for a brief period when the school screwed uo and thought they could just use another childs when he was absent, we set them straight on this immediatly) Maranda really responds well to deep pressure, joint compression and the weighted vest helps her feel more " grounded " as for where to get one I'm not sure as hers is supplied by the school as an adaptive tool and is monitored by her O/T. Hope this helps, Valarie in Calif

Guest guest
<What are these weighted vests for? I've never heard of them?> Weighted vests are meant to literally slow our little stimmers down and keep them from flitting from thing to thing without really attending to anything. It worked for for a week or two, then he got used to it and he didn't even notice he was wearing it. Pat
Guest guest
<What are these weighted vests for? I've never heard of them?> Some kids need deep pressure treatment and the weighted vests help with this. If your child likes to pile pillows on top of him/her or crawls under the mattress or couch pillows, weighted vests might be a good thing for you to look into. Dr. Temple Grandin invented a deep pressure machine to help her with her need for deep pressure. It helps her cope.
