Guest guest Posted March 10, 2006 Report Posted March 10, 2006 Hi Sue. I would be the " person " mentioned in this post from Aussie Jane. I am the other Jane, US Jane. Yeh, go to an endo. Most family docs don't know enough about dxing goiters, in my opinion. All I have is my experience, and medical stuff I've read since on the web, and learned from my endo, and others experiences with thyroid cancer from the Thyca support list. But, had I known what I know now, almost 3 yrs ago when during an annual physical, my family doc noted one side of my thyroid was large, I would have pressed to have a scan done of it. At the time, she ordered blood work, and since it came back as normal per thyroid, nothing else was done. And here's my story : there was a small spot on each side of my thyroid that was pumping out thyroid juice overtime. The rest of my thyroid had died, and some was turning to mush to be integrated into the body, from being dead. All my blood work from almost 3 yrs ago, up to surgery, showed measurable thyroid juice was normal. The most noticeable sign I know now, that something was wrong with the thyroid, was a year and a half of diarrhea. I didn't go to the doc about that, until after a year and a half of it. Then shortly after, my very large thyroid was found on a CT scan that was looking for stuff in my abdomen, just accident it went up far enough to see the thyroid. Diarrhea cleared up after the removal. I had a diagnostic thyroid uptake scan, you go nuclear for that, it showed all the thyroid was cold except for 2 small hyper spots. That indicated a total thyroidectomy to my docs. Once opening me in surgery, my surgeon said my lobes were the size of tangerines, that since thyroid cancer grows slowly, it had been growing for years. Even with lobes that large, my biopsy, 6 sticks on each side, missed the cancer. The report said one side was benign, the other side suspicious. The pathology report after removal found the cancer, big areas of it. I have not liked collars touching my neck, and now in retrospect, can see it was cuz the pressure of the goiter. But it grew so slowly and so gradually, that I didn't know it to be anything other than the way things are. Drs thought I had a large neck. Now that the inflammed dying thyroid is out, my neck has reduced quite a bit in size, and apparently my face had been swollen too. Now that swelling has gone down some, I have wrinkles ! I prided myself for being 50 but not looking 50, but apparently the swelling kept wrinkled at bay. oh sigh. So, one thing I can do from my experience is to tell others, now, to press for imaging of their thyroid if it enlarges. Before my surgery, far too many docs quoted the statistics to me of how rarely goiters are cancer, well, mine was. If you want to hear any more from me, it's best to email me privately, off list. Now that I have recovered from my surgery and treatment, I don't go on the web that often any more. If it happens to turn out to be cancer, or removal suggested, there is the thyroid cancer support group. Their website is www.thyca.org From there are links to the email support group. And to all you others - last week I finally turned a major corner in reoovering from all this, and the me I know, is back - mind clarity, getting back to getting some tasks done during the day. It feels sooo good, and hope there is more improvement. 4 months post TT. US Jane > > > > Hi Aussie Jane > > > > LOL! Ok, I was just reading and trying to figure out > > Who Tina was ! Guest guest Posted March 10, 2006 Report Posted March 10, 2006 -Hi US Jane, Good to hear from you. Your story is one that I am keeping focussed as all my Labs are so normal that my Drs are being rude and unhelpful. Nearly 3 hours since I did that test and Goitre is hurting so much. And I thought it was a good day today. When I woke my voice was not husky even. Is that how your symptoms were ? Vague - and worse at times and better at times ? My necklaces are getting tighter and I have always hated tight necklines in jumpers. I am still trying to find a Dr that can order the Scan. Do you mean it has to be MRI as well ? Guest guest Posted March 11, 2006 Report Posted March 11, 2006 I'm about a month out from my appointment with my ent to discuss removal/biopsy/uptake scans... I joked around a year or so ago that it needed to come out... I'll be really happy to get it out, I have a feeling my body will do better without it. Not that I don't love my thyroid gland... but my body just doesn't feel right... like it's got something inside it... last time I felt that I had my gall bladder removed (per my request which turns out was almost ready to burst) then I got diagnosed with PKD and now doc wants to remove the thyroid... maybe I should be one of those medical intuitives *sigh* of course.. it only seems to work for myself lol. I'm not really scared at all... but you know, do you think it's a strange request when they take my thyroid out to tell them I want to see it afterwards? I want to see the little buggar that has been giving me all this trouble lol. Re: question for anyone about weird feeling in neck... Hi Sue. Guest guest Posted March 11, 2006 Report Posted March 11, 2006 Hi Jane, My symptoms stop as soon as I lower my hand or release elevation of the arm. I have had the ultrasound and uptake scans and when she felt my thyroid she said It felt smaller and my general doc said that a few months ago as well... I don’t have any nodules that show up on the two sonos I have had... I will call Monday to let her know to see how she wants to deal with it I am guessing a scan is in order.... They had nothing to biopsy last time since No lumps are on my thyroid, just the enlarged side... Sue Hi Sue ( got it right this time !), Well - I am getting a 2nd opinion re my 'tight' feeling. As someone pointed out to me - her thyroid cancer had very few symptoms. Blood tests normal, Scan normal, 6 biopies before it was found. Always something to keep in mind if you have concerns. Your symptoms sounded exactly what my Dr described to me and what she was looking for. Apparently I was OK although I dispute that. 1 hour 15 mins since I did that test ( again) and throat Goitre is still throbbing, and voice is husky. I don't think that is normal .... How long do your symptoms take to disappear if you do that movement during Yoga ? Aussie Jane > > Hi Aussie Jane > > LOL! Ok, I was just reading and trying to figure out > Who Tina was ! Guest guest Posted March 11, 2006 Report Posted March 11, 2006 HI , I have had the two sonos, and know I have the goiter and I had a radioactive uptake scan as well... I just forget to ask the endo about the “weirdness” I feel when in that position.... And have been told by my endo And my GP that my goiter feels smaller and my last sono showed it had actually shrunk some. This was about a year ago... I guess what I am wondering is could that “weird” pressure be “harmless” and just annoying? Sue it definitely sounds like you have a goiter. mine is so large that my ent and gp can feel it. you still can't see it... i would try both... if one doc says no, and the other doc says yes, then you can get some where... be persistant. with me, when i see my doc soon, i get to tell my doc that i'm starting to have trouble swallowing things like medications and have to grind them up to take them. i also feel this popping in my throat whenever i swallow. you have to be really subtle yet informative with doctors... since my primary wants my thyroid to come out, he's obviously won't come as a shock... as for you, go tell your doc or call their office & leave a message and say i've noticed this... blah blah, this is what happens when i do this blah blah, i want to come see you about it. make an appointment and list possible goiter (which to me sounds like you have) docs know if you have a goiter it's probably only a matter of time (especially with nodules) that it will need to come out. tell your doc how you feel, especially tell him if on the days your neck bothers you, you feel worse... for some reason when we talk in medically smart jargon they will sometimes ignore then we have to revert to stupid patient routine and then they get it *shrug*... lol. good luck and keep me updated, Re: question for anyone about weird feeling in neck... Guest guest Posted March 11, 2006 Report Posted March 11, 2006 Ok, I did some refreshing of my memory on goiters and found this. I bolded the ones I have symptoms for. I guess because I so seldom do that one pose out of memory of it bugging me, I had stopped it. And when I tried it again this week, I remembered how much It really does bother me and cursed myself for not remembering to tell my endo When I was in there with her. In any case, she’s VERY available, has a great front office and nursing staff And I will let them know on Monday... Thanks guys... Sue What are the Symptoms of a Goiter? Some goiters can be tender to the touch. An enlarged thyroid can also press on your windpipe or your esophagus, which may make you cough, have a hoarse voice, feel shortness of breath, feel like you don't want to wear turtlenecks or neckties, feel fullness in your neck, experience choking or shortness of breath at night, or feel like food is getting stuck in your throat. Causes of Goiter In areas outside the U.S., particularly parts of Asia and Africa, iodine deficiency is a key cause of goiter. But in the U.S. and many other industrialized nations, the use of iodized salt and processed foods has eliminated that problem for all but about 10-20% of the population. In the U.S., goiter is more commonly caused by autoimmune thyroid problems that cause an inflammatory reaction in the thyroid. Doctors will typically treat a smaller goiter with thyroid hormone replacement drugs. This can slow down or stop the growth of the goiter, but doesn't typically shrink the goiter. If the goiter continues to grow while on thyroid hormone, or symptoms continue, or the goiter is cosmetically unsightly, most doctors will recommend surgery. If the goiter contains any suspicious nodules, that may also be reason for surgery. Quote
Guest guest Posted March 11, 2006 Report Posted March 11, 2006 Hi Sue, It sounds like your Endo is working with you on this. The sono has been done - she is aware and is monitering the situation. How recent is your last sono and have the symptoms you describe changed at all since then? But still a good idea to run this past your Endo. Sometimes the Goitre is not that visible and may be larger than you can see. In my situation I have the same symptoms but have never had a scan done .... ( 30 years of Goitre and no scans ....)That is why I am reading and reading all I can. Guest guest Posted March 11, 2006 Report Posted March 11, 2006 When do you get yours out? Let me know how that goes -- keep us posted. How long has yours been bothering you that badly? I really want the scan done to verify it is still smaller than it was when first discovered two years ago, and my last scan was a year ago. My doc here in San , Dr. Dianne Fetchik has never even raised an eyebrown at any tests I have requested — she even does my hormones and cholesterol — so I am guessing she will want a scan. I never had a biopsy – are you saying they can biopsy the goiter itself—since I have no nodules...? Thanks, Sue could be harmless... that is how mine started out.. now I'm having it removed. A goiter is a sign that your gland is not working properly. It tries to increase it's size to make more hormone... when it gets enough hormone, it starts to shrink but might not go back to normal. Have you had biopsies? Until you show up with nodules or swollen lymph glands they will probably not do anything, unless you go doctor shopping. Sadly, eventhough they are our bodies, doctors look at us like we're stupid when we tell them what we think is wrong... if your neck feels inflamed or sore you can take aleve for it and it will help wonders... My goiter is so large now that I feel it pressing against my wind pipe when I'm just breathing in... so yup, time to come out for me. Hopefully, you'll never have to go through that. Let me know what they say though. You can either keep it the way it is and monitor it very closely or get more opinions. Either way, keep me informed. A. Re: question for anyone about weird feeling in neck... HI , I have had the two sonos, and know I have the goiter and I had a radioactive uptake scan as well... Sue Quote
Guest guest Posted March 11, 2006 Report Posted March 11, 2006 I think they can biopsy anything that can sit still. I mean, if they can get blood out of turnips *holds up arm* they should be able to do biopsies also. But that's just my humble opinion. I still have to meet with my ent to discuss getting it out and what not. My family doc def. thinks it needs to come out and I've had a goiter since about 2001-3 I can't remember. Last few years I've had it get larger slowly. You still can't see it but it's there if you feel it. My nodules I've had for a long time also I don't remember when they first showed up. A few years ago I think. The best thing you can probably do is talk to your doc and say look.. I'm having x wrong with me, what possibly causes that and is it related to my thyroid. With my doc sometimes I play stupid with info I already know, just so I can get an in and add to it. If I add to it and sound smart, they listen more. Your doc seems to be alright with the testing and what not so she might be willing to help you figure out what's wrong and if she doesn't want to or you feel stalemated, try to get another doc or go away for a week or two and regroup then come back again. If nothing else be persistant and get on their nerves.. you'd be surprised how quick they find a 'cure' then lol. A. Re: question for anyone about weird feeling in neck...
