This is the first I've seen about yawning, and it's very

encouraging. I have always thought that yawning was a symptom of

ALS, and since I'm still waiting for a definite dx, and I do yawn a

great deal, I was sure I have ALS. Maybe I do, but I'm still in the

running for PLS now that I know that yawning is also part of PLS.

Thanks.

As you can see from the chart below, forced yawning is an upper

motor neuron sign:

http://www.wfnals.org/guidelines/1998elescorial/elescorial1998tab1.ht

m

Lower motor neuron signs: weakness, atrophy, fasciculations

Brainstem: jaw, face, palate, tongue, larynx

Cervical: neck, arm, hand, diaphragm

Thoracic: back, abdomen

Lumbosacral: back, abdomen, leg, foot

Upper motor neuron signs: pathologic spread of reflexes, clonus,

etc.

Brainstem: clonic jaw, gag reflex, exaggerated snout reflex,

pseudobulbar features, forced yawning, pathologic DTR's, spatstic

tone

Cervical: clonic DTR's, Hoffman reflex, pathologic DTR's,

spastic tone, preserved reflex in weak wasted limb

Thoracic, loss of superficial abdominal, pathologic DTR's,

spastic tone

Lumbosacral: clonic DTR's - extensor, plantar response,

pathologic DTR's, spastic tone, preserved reflex in weak wasted limb

I didn't know that yawning was a symptom of PLS. I yawn all the

time, and I thought it was just from tiredness. I'm yawning alot

right now as I'm typing this! What is " forced yawning " ? I'd like

to hear more about this.

I went to my ENT today for a annual check up for my allergy medication and

I told him that sometimes I feel I am out in the country on a hot summer day

because I'm constantly hearing crickets in my ears. He ran a hearing and inner

ear test and found I had nerve deteriation in my ears, more on the left; which

is the side I'm most effected on; than my right and he said that was the reason

I was hearing crickets or ringing. Recommended hearing aides.

Yes, forced yawning is a sympton of PLS.

Also, hyperreflexes - spastic tone - emotional liability - forced

yawning - clonus - preserved reflex in a weak, wasted limb - legs,

arms, speech and swallowing affected - babinski sign - muscle spasms -

startle - frontal lobe dysfunction, mild - legs before arms.

At least this is what I have gleaned from the articles on PLS.

I am sure there's others I haven't listed because this sure isn't much!

LOL

I think all the yawning is what has caused my ears to ring in the past.

We have a lot to contend with, but we're a tough bunch and will take it

as it comes.

Robins winging your way,
