Hi, Lesa. Ourson joseph waqs dignosed as PDD-NOS when

he was two (he is five now). PDD-NOS is Pervavise

Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified.

Basically, it's a catch-all diagnosis when a child

exhibits some of the definitions of autism, such as

the repetitive tendencies you posted about earlier,

but not all of them. PDD is considered an autistic

spectrum disorder. There is much debate about the

diagnosis and I'm not even sure about it with ph,

as he was also diagnosed as apraxic and with sensory

integration dysfunction. I applaud you for

recognizing denial and working to get out of it; my

wife Ann and I went through that when we heard the

dread word " autism " but we just wanted Joe to be

better so we forced ourselves to face it. I made so

many excuses for why Joe behaved the way he did. The

best thing you can do is use this site and do other

research to find out more about these diagnoses so you

can determine what is best for your child and be a

strong advocate. It's a long road but it has its

rewards as well as its disappointments. Hang in

there.

Good luck,

Jim

Pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified.

A diagnosis of autistic disorder is made when an individual displays 6 or

more of 12 symptoms listed across three major areas: social interaction,

communication, and behavior. When children display similar behaviors but do

not meet the criteria for autistic disorder, they may receive a diagnosis of

Pervasive Developmental Disorder-NOS (PDD not otherwise specified).

Definition from Autism/PDD Resources Network.
