Guest guest
(7 years old) has been saying " what " when we are talking to her a lot lately. All of us are having to repeat ourselves 2 or 3 times. We are all frustrated (even and ). 's had her hearing tested several times. It's come back normal. She also said that she thought her teacher said " mammal " on their spelling test when her teacher said " animal " . Don't know what to do. Any suggestions? Guest guest
My 3.8yo apraxic child has started doing the same thing recently. I do not believe this is an auditory/hearing problem, I think it is more of a habit or unconscious response if they are not completely focused on what you are saying. It may also be an automatic response as a result of us having him repeat some words or phrases to better understand what he is trying to say. On many occations we ask Chase " what " or " show me " for clarification. In addition, my 12yo daughter has this same habit (and has done this for as long as I can remember) ; However, when I say " oh, never mind, " she'll then be able to reply to my comment or question. Chase on many occations exibits the same abilities. I have even caught my self doing the same thing, say " what " , when my husband asks me a question, because my focus is on something other his conversation. This may not be anything to worry about! Guest guest
What types of hearing testing have you done and was it with a pediatric audiologist? is deaf (3 1/2) and has a cochlear implant- and I know from reading that kids w/ even a mild hearing loss- esp when being tested in a booth- can become experts w/ their eyes to even know a change in facial expression or slight body movement to catch a sound. Have they done an OAE or ABR? I can explain if you want more on these? Amy [ ] Saying " what " all the time > (7 years old) has been saying " what " when we are talking to > her a lot lately. Guest guest
One thing we do w/ ....and he does have a hearing problem...is have a lot of specific practice hearing time. This may be helpful even w/o a hearing problem. Specifically we do Auditory Verbal Therapy. There are many activities do to this with. Some ideas can be found at www.listen-up.org.
