Guest guest
We did investigate our town's special ed preschool, just to cover all of our bases. Our goal was to put Hadley in a program that was rich with spoken language. Given the developmental challenges that most of the kids had, the only people talking were the two adults in the classroom, and that language was pretty simple. The preschool also only ran for 2 days a week, for a 2.5 hour session. We were looking for something that was more consistent. It just was not the right place for our child. You are correct that these programs vary widely. You may be able to ask the school or early intervention program to put you in touch with parents of HOH children who have gone to these programs to get first hand information. Kerry public preschool I am researching public preschool. Most districts will have a preschool that works like Headstart- for those low income or with significant speech delay- ie. they don't speak enought English. Has anyone sent their hearing impaired child to one of these preschools? What did you think? I realize they can vary greatly!! b's mommbie! Guest guest
b's mommie, My son, , goes to a public preschool. He is in a special ed program but half his class are normally developing children from some kind of low income or headstart type program. They hand select the children in 's class to make sure they are appropriate speech models. He is in his second year with the same teacher. His teacher is a speech pathologist and he receives daily pull out speech sessions. I would recommend visiting one of the classrooms you're considering and then make sure you meet with the teachers or anyone else who will work with your child to make sure they develop a program that will meet his/her needs.
